Issuing a strong note of warning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said the government would not spare anyone involved in the recent abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj.
"We won't spare anyone involved in the abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj, no matter how powerful the person is," the Prime Minister told the weekly cabinet meeting.
According to sources close to the meeting, the Prime Minister raised the Narayanganj abduction issue at the meeting and issued the warning.
The Prime Minister told the meeting that the government is pursuing a strong stance to find out the real culprits. "We're firm to find out the culprits …we won't leave any stone unturned," she said.
The other cabinet members who were present at the meeting unequivocally supported the Prime Minister's stance. Hasina asked the cabinet members to remain watchful about the matter and work sincerely.
On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city.
Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge's Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Another body, believed to be of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.
After the abduction of the Narayanganj panel mayor and ward councilor Nazrul, Prime Minister, who is in-charge of the Home Ministry, summoned her deputy, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, to her official residence on April 30.
She directed the law enforcement agencies to arrest the culprits as soon as possible. The Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district, the Commanding Officer of RAB-11 and two other police officers have been withdrawn at the Prime Minister's directive.
Police have so far arrested a number of people for their alleged involvement in the abductions and killings.
Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday formed a four-member committee to investigate the alleged involvement of its members in the recent abduction and killing of seven people, including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam.
Nur Hossian, a Narayanganj city Awami League leader and also a councilor, is the prime accused in the case filed in connection with the abduction and killing of city panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his four associates, but he has gone into hiding despite the close watch of the intelligence agencies.
State Minister for Home Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said Nur Hossain was under a strong surveillance, but he went into hiding.
