The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held its 4th convocation on Thursday at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.  Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, MP declared the opening of the Convocation 2016 on behalf of the Chancellor while the convocation speech was delivered by eminent Human Rights Activist, Advocate Sultana Kamal. Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh was present as special guest.
Addressing the graduating students, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid urged them to use their education to become real assets of the country. "The progress of our nation depends on your future activities" he said, adding, "you have to be world class citizens using your talents and skills."
UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan underscored the needs to be historically conscious of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and dedicate ourselves to the development of the country.
In her convocation speech, Advocate Sultana Kamal highlighted the ethos of liberal humanism and requested the students to devote themselves in protecting human dignity and rights. She also asked the students to be tolerant in a world that is becoming very devisive.
ULAB acting Vice Chancellor Prof Imran Rahman delivered welcome speech and led the convocation ceremony.
Vice President of the ULAB Board of Trustees Dr Kazi Anis Ahmed maintained that education should be a combination of rationalism and imagination. A message from the Founder and Chaiman Kazi Shahid Ahmed was read out during the event.
The theme for ULAB Convocation 2016 is "Journey towards Excellence."  The theme reflects the connection between liberal arts education and human excellence.  Around 1,325 graduates from undergraduate (1,031) and graduate (294) programs received their certificates this year.  Convocation valedictorian is Hosneara Yeasmin Eti from the English and Humanities Department.  The Gold Medalists are Azharul Alam for the undergraduate program and Hosneara Yesmin Eti for the graduate program.
ULAB began its journey on October 1, 2004 and currently has about 4,500 students from undergraduate and graduate programmes. Over the years, the university has expanded its undergraduate programmes in Business Administration; English and Humanities; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; and Media Studies and Journalism and graduate programmes in Master of Business Administration; Executive Master of Business Administration; Master of Arts English; and Masters in Communication. The first convocation of the university was held in July 2010, the second convocation took place in November 2012 and third convocation was held in November 2014.
