Seminar on Int'l Human Rights Day at ASAUB

International Human Rights Day on December 10 this year is devoted to the 51st anniversary of the two international human rights treaties namely the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, (ICCPR) 1966 and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, (ICESCR) 1966. Moreover, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights. To sensitize about the essence of human rights, Department of Law, ASA University Bangladesh in collaboration with Youth for Human Rights International, Bangladesh Chapter, Law Life Culture (LLC), and Asia Pacific Masters Association (APMA) for Human Rights and Democratization of Sydney organized a seminar on "Stand up for Someone's Rights Today". The program was held on last Saturday at the auditorium of ASA University Bangladesh (ASAUB). About 70 people actively took part the Seminar. Speakers observed that many of us are fearful about the way Bangladesh is heading. Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of Bangladesh.
 As welcome speaker of the seminar, Md. Saiful Alam, Chairman, Department of Law, ASAUB, welcomed the guests and audience of the program for their participation. As a panel discussant, ZI Khan Panna, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh ,Chairman, Human Rights and Legal Aid Committee, Bangladesh Bar Council focused on Articles 7 and 70 of Bangladesh Constitution saying "Rule of law and rights of the citizens should be prioritized rather doing other things like enacting laws specifically to control the citizens of the country". "Article 70 of the Constitution of Bangladesh should be abolished as soon as possible", Panna added.   Shireen Haq, Member, Naripokkho discussed on various human rights issues of Bangladesh with special focus on the rights of sex workers. Zakir Hossain, Executive Director, Nagorik Uddyog focused in his discussion about the current incidence of the violence against minorities mentioning the Ramu incident. He also discussed the sufferings of the people of Dalit communities of Bangladesh whose basic needs are being violated. In addition.
