Sylhet Correspondent :
Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) is implementing a number of schemes worth Tk 268.9 million under a massive project for expanding irrigation facilities to the croplands of four districts of Sylhet division, official sources said.
The irrigation related schemes are to be implemented in the region this year under a five-year project, informed project Director of Sylhet division minor irrigation development project, Shahabuddin Talukder, also the superintending engineer of BADC.
Bidding process for some of the schemes had already been completed by December while some others are on. Soon we would go for implementation, he added.
Under this year's programme, 65 km drain and canals would be re-excavated at a cost of Tk 78.75 million, six water control and preservation structures (sluice gates) at a cost of Tk 30 million, construction of 25 box culverts would cost Tk 12.5 million, digging of 14 force mode tubewells would cost Tk 21.35 million, digging of 10 forcemode tubewells with solar panel at a cost of Tk 17.875 million, construction of RCC drains for 52 low lift pumps and setting buried pipelines with a cost of Tk 164.2 million and construction of electricity line for 45 schemes at a cost of Tk 15.46 5 million.
Besides, construction of a zonal office building in Moulvibazar and completion of the circle office-cum-training centre in Sylhet would cost another Tk 40 million.
When implemented irrigation facilities in all the 38 upazilas under the districts of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj and Sylhet would be expanded, the official said, adding, "The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2019."
Target of the project is to provide irrigation to 14,000 hectares of farmland every year through excavating drains and canals alongside the streams on the hilly areas. Besides utilisation of underground water on some areas would be ensured through setting buried pipes, the project director stated, it would help yield of additional 86,000 tonnes of food grains.
Besides, some single crop lands would turn double-crop and the double crop lands would be turned into three-cropped.
Most of the farm lands in the division had long been lacking minimum irrigation facilities, which hindered the farming of different crops, official reports read. The government has planned some special programme for Sylhet division since it has been far behind in agriculture with poor interest of farmers in general. About 160,000 hectares of land remain arable every year only during the Robi season.
However, due to rocky soil condition, sinking of tube well of all types is impossible or hard in some upazilas like Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Kanaight, Companiganj.
