Managing Director of Chittagong WASA Engr AKM Fazlullah said the problems of water in the port city will ease to the maximum extents following the full-fledged operation of the newly installed Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant of Rangunia, Chittagong.
The experimental operation of the said water treatment plant formally launched from Sunday last Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the plant through teleconference from Chittagong Boat club on Sunday.
CWASA chief said the total demand of Chittagong city is 50 crore liters daily but WASA supplied only 20 crore liters, as a result the deficit was 30 crore liters. Following the supply of water from the Rangunia plant, the 60% deficit have been fulfilled, he added.
From this new project, on average 14 crore liters water is being supplied to Chittagong grid. CWASA chief Engr. Fazlullah said Sheikh Hasina Water Plant was commissioned on experimental basis earlier in November but Prime Minister finally inaugurated the project for full-fledged operation from March 12 last .He also apprised to this correspondent that most of the  40-50 years old supply line in city witnessing leakage in the meantime after joining the new supply of Rangunia plant and authority is replacing these supply line in phases. He said soon after any information of leakage, the old pipe lines are being instantly changed.
CWASA chief Engr.AKM Fazlullah also said the age-old rundown supply lines cannot withstand the huge pressure of the increased supply of water.
Therefore, the supply lines are developing leakages frequently. He said, "The leakage repairing task has now emerged to be a challenge for us. We have so far repaired 400 leakages from November 1. We have information that more 300 leakages have developed in different parts of the city."
AKM Fazlullah also said that Chittagong WASA could not undertake any project after 1987 and with the launching of the mega project, the city dwellers would get more 143 million liters of water (MLD) per day which will cover about 70 percent of the total demand of water.  He further said two more water treatment plants will be installed by 2020 aimed at cent percent supply to the total demands of the city dwellers. He also informed that one project is on pipeline outside city aimed at supplying water to Patiya and Anowara areas.
