Rangpur  Correspondent :
Garlic growers in  Rangur  district are apprehensive as the cultivation of the spicy crop is severely been affected due to  root rotting disease.
The disease is causing massive damage to many garlic fields at different villages of the 8 upazila this season before the eyes of the helpless farmers. It decomposes the root and bulb and withers the plants of the crop and ultimately the plants die, it is alleged. A number of farmers alleged that if necessary steps are not taken immediately they might not achieve expected yield of the produce during the current season.
Asraful Rahman (48), a farmer of Char Thakurdas village  said that he cultivated the crop on 40 decimals  of land this season with the hope to earn good profit. But his hopes got shattered when he found more than 70 percent of his field got damaged because of the disease.    Alamin Mia (40), another garlic grower of Nazirdaho village in the Upazila said around 50 percent of his  40 decimal of land have been damaged owing to the disease. Plants are getting dry and roots are rotting rapidly.
He sprayed medicine several times but got no benefit, hesaid.  Farmers of five districts under the zone cultivated  Garlic on around 12015 hectares of land this season against the DAE's target of 8,2001 hectares official sources of DAE said.
Finding no other alternatives many growers are harvesting their produce much early this year and consequently they are not getting expected yield, sources alleged. Expressing frustration a number of growers told The New Nation that  this year market price of the crop is much satisfactory but low production  of it, caused by disease made the cultivators disheartened, they also said.
