An all-time record Boro rice production is likely as the farmers exceeded the fixed farming target in Rangpur agriculture region this season following various effective and pro-farmer steps of the government.
"The excellent growing Boro rice plants have given greener eye-catching looks to vast tracts of the crop fields under favourable climatic conditions now," said Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) SM Ashraf Ali.
According to the DAE sources, the farmers have already planted Boro rice seedling in over 5.05 lakh hectares of land, 3,066 hectares higher than the fixed target under Boro farming this season in the region.
The agri-scientists and experts have been providing necessary practical knowledge, latest and proven technologies and advice to the farmers for achieving the Boro production target.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said the government fixed a target of producing 20.69 lakh tonnes of clean Boro rice from 5.02 lakh hectares of land for Rangpur agriculture region this season.
Under the programme, 7.17 lakh tonnes hybrid Boro rice will be produced from 1.51 lakh hectares of land, 13.49 lakh tonnes high yielding variety rice from 3.48 lakh hectares and 3.49 tonnes local variety Boro rice from 1,884 hectares of land this time in the region.
"However, the farmers have cultivated hybrid variety Boro rice in 1.51 lakh hectares of land, high yielding variety in 3.49 lakh hectares and local variety in 2,115 hectares exceeding the fixed farming target by 3,066 hectares of land in the region," he said.
"Over 2.51 lakh pumps, including power and diesel driven deep tube wells, shallow tube wells, low lift pumps and solar panel driven pumps have been put into operation for irrigating the Boro fields in all five districts under the region," he said.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Shah Alam said officials of all agriculture related organisations were extending assistance to farmers and monitoring supply of diesel, electricity and fertilisers to make the Boro farming programme successful.
