Reza Mahmud :
The government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) has agreed to reopen its labour markets for Bangladeshi workers soon.
"The UAE government is keen to reopen its closed job markets for Bangladeshi workers. We will realise its result within an week," Nurul Islam, Minister for Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, said this after a meeting with UAE Labour and Development Minister Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
According to sources, the UAE is the second largest labour market for Bangladeshi migrant workers. More than 23 lakh workers got jobs in the country since 1976. It was stopped to give visa for Bangladeshi workers from August 2012. It was blamed for some irregularities and unethical activities of the Bangladeshi workers behind the ban of giving working visa.
Since then the government and the Bangladesh International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA)
are trying in different ways to reopen the job market.
According to migrant sources, the Bangladeshi workers have been passing their hard days there due to some tough rules of the country. The workers could not change employers. So, they are compelled to stay in the same workplace for long with limited wages.
Minister Nurul Islam said that the UAE labour minister has agreed to relax the rule. The Bangladeshi workers, who are working there for more than three years, can change their employers now.
The Bangladeshi workers there are now very happy with the news, sources said.
The UAE Minister Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash said that his country is positive about the professional training and capabilities of the Bangladeshi manpower there.
He expressed the hope that his ministry will work closely with other ministries of the country to more widening of their doors for Bangladeshi migrants.
Saqr Ghobash said that he is working to arrange a joint technical committee meeting between his country and Bangladesh in Dhaka soon aiming to recruit more Bangladeshi workers there.
The recruiting agencies of Bangladesh are also become hopeful about the results of the two ministers meeting in Abu Dhabi. They think that the door of UAE is opening soon for the workforce of Bangladesh.
"Many of recruiting agencies are now closed due to the shrunken labour markets abroad for our manpower. We are now hopeful that the UAE job market is opening soon. It is the second largest labour market abroad for our workforce," said Shariful Islam, an executive of Dynamic Trade Syndicate, a manpower recruiting agency in Dhaka.
He said, "If the market is opened the recruiting agencies will get back their business largely. The workforce will also be happy as the wages of UAE is comparatively high for our workers."
