Price hike of essentials on rise in Khulna ahead of holy Ramzan

Despite TCB's starting of selling some essentials since May15,2017 (Monday), prices of essential commodities including rice, fish, vegetables, meat, sugar, edible-oil, salt, chickpeas, puffed-rice and some spices are on the rise in the kitchen markets of Khulna city and district ahead of the upcoming holy Ramzan. Whole-sellers are allegedly increasing prices by creating artificial crisis, mounts sufferings to the people of Khulna inhabitants.
Traders are increasing prices on the plea of heavy rainfall, floods and storms which caused severe damage to crops at different places in Khulna region.
Market observers found hands of the middlemen in devouring the shares of the farmers in profits and in creating price gap between whole-sellers and retailers.
On a recent spot visit, this correspondent found that coarse rice like swarna and BR-11 were selling at Tk. 40 to 43, Barridhan-28, Paijam, Kajol lata at Tk.50 to 54 per kg in city's rice markets.
Of the vegetables, potato was selling at Tk. 20, brinjal at Tk. 40 to 45, bitter gourd at Tk.50 to 55, papaya at Tk.22 to25, gourd at Tk 30 to 40 per piece, drumstick (sajina) at Tk. 50 to 55, snake-gourd at Tk. 35 to 40, Okra at Tk. 60, capsicum at Tk. 100 per kg, and spinach at Tk. 8 to 10 per bundle.
Of fishes, cat fish was selling at Tk. 250 to 350, shrimp at Tk. 250 to 300, cultivated koi at Tk.150, walking fish at Tk. 500 to 700 and lobster at Tk. 500 to 600.
The price of chicken was Tk 140 to 160 per kg and of layer at Tk. 140 to 190 per kg. Indigenous chicken was selling at Tk. 400 to 420 per kg while Pakistani variety was selling at Tk. 250 to 260 per kg. Beef was selling at Tk. 450 to 500 per kg.
Onion was selling at Tk. 30 to 35 per kg, garlic at Tk.100 to 130 perkg, ginger at Tk. 45 to 100 per kg, soyabean oil at Tk. 110 (1 litre) and 220(2 litres).
Of Lentil, was selling at Tk. 63 to 64 per Kg, Boot dal at Tk.35 per kg, kheshari dal at Tk. 62 to 63 per kg. Chhola was selling at Tk. 72 per kg, Chira at Tk. 32 to 50 per kg and Muri (Puffed rice) at Tk. 55 per kg.
It is learnt from reliable sources that like the previous years, Trading Corporation Of Bangladesh (TCB) started to sell onion, sugar, chhola, dal and soyabean oil through 811 distributors by 185 trucks throughout the country.
Among them, by 33 trucks in the capital city Dhaka, 10 trucks in Chittagong, 5 trucks at other divisional cities and by 2 trucks at other district towns of the country.
Commerce Minister Tofayel Ahmed told the journalists that the government is ready this year to ensure for selling goods through TCB during the holy Ramadan.
This year dal and chhola were brought from Australia, the government would give deficit crores of taka for the purposes, he added.
The commerce minister also warned that the dealers who will create artificial crisis, stern action will be taken against them.
