Life Desk :
The magical liquid rice water is known to have existed for centuries. Rice water, as the name suggests is fermented water used as a beauty potion by women around the world. With a plethora of beauty products available today, certain traditional home remedies have been pushed aside. Why not bring them back? If you want better skin and hair, give this simple all natural home remedy a try. Trust us, you're not going to regret it.
What is rice water?
It's literally the water remaining after soaking or boiling rice. This cloudy white liquid is a storehouse of some powerful vitamins and minerals which are an excellent source of nourishment for your skin and hair. The ancient practice was followed by women in China, Japan and Southeast Asia as the miracle elixir to wash and rinse their hair. To put things into perspective, a small village called Huangluo located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (South Central China) holds the Guinness Book of World Records for "the world's longest hair village". This is because every woman belonging to that village has an average hair length of over 1.5 meters. Not only do the youngsters sport such luscious hair, the older women in their seventies also have shiny black hair. Their secret? Rice water.
How to make Rice water?
Fermented rice water is rich in vitamin B which also happens to promote melanin production for hair. The women belonging to Huangluo village use the fermented water (the one you get after rinsing the rice) as their shampoo. They mix a few other natural ingredients like tea seeds and ginger for a fortifying shampoo.
You could make the recipe that suits you:
First, you could make it the traditional way. Soak about half a cup of uncooked rice in water for about 15-30 minutes or overnight (depending on the time you have). Strain the rice and your rice water is ready for use. Add a couple of drops of essential oil like rosemary, lavender or geranium if you feel the smell is too strong for you.
Second, you could make it by boiling the rice. Prepare the rice as you would normally do. Once the rice is ready, strain it out. The remaining water would be milky white in color and will contain all the essential nutrients. An essential oil can be added to this recipe as well, once the water has cooled down.
Third, you could make the water just like the women of Huangluo. Add half a cup of uncooked rice to water and then some slices of ginger, tea seeds and orange peel ( to lighten the smell of the rice water). Pour the mixture into a ceramic or earthen ware container. Close the lid and allow the mixture to ferment at room temperature for about 10 days. Your mixture would be ready after 10 days and can be used as a shampoo. Pour a small amount over your hair, keep it for 10-15 minutes and rinse it out with water.
The first two can be used on both skin and hair, while the last one is strictly for your hair.
Beauty benefits of Rice water on-
Skin
Rice water contains a number of vitamins and minerals which are like superfoods for your skin. It's also a great anti-oxidant thanks to the presence of ferulic acid. The magic water can be used as a facial cleanser or toner to minimize the pores and tighten skin. Rice water works like magic and can give you radiant, supple skin with regular use. It can also be used to treat acne as it has the ability to heal the skin and help control the outbreak. Other uses include treating eczema, soothing irritated skin and a sunburn. This is due to the anti-inflammatory properties present in the water. Cold rice water will help heal damaged skin recover fast and prevent any further damage to your skin.
How to use: Take a cotton swab soaked with the liquid and apply it to your face if you want to use it as a cleanser or toner. You could even pour it into an empty bottle with a spray nozzle and directly spray the mixture onto your face. For a larger surface area, use a big cloth dipped in rice water and apply it to the affected area.
Verdict : My skin felt so soft that I didn't require any moisturizer after applying it. And there was a glow to my skin after using it. Will I continue using it? Yes, definitely.
Hair
Due to the presence of a carbohydrate called inositol, rice water has the ability to strengthen, maintain elasticity and reduce surface friction in hair. Rice water can be used as a hair rinse, conditioner or shampoo. It will add shine and help it to stay strong and healthy.
How to use: You could either use it as a last rinse after you've shampooed your hair. Pour the liquid over your hair, massage your scalp and rinse with plain water. Use it once or twice a week. For more nourishment, you could leave it in your hair for 10-15 minutes and rinse as usual.
Verdict: It acted as a perfect conditioner by making my hair super soft. I can't guarantee strength or shine right now as I haven't used it for that long. But if you're looking for a good all natural conditioner, this is certainly for you. Will I continue using it? Yes, of course! I want to provide maximum nourishment to my hair.
