Chittagong Bureau :
Shipping Minister M Shajahan Khan laid the foundation of Potenga Container Terminal (PCT) at the cost of  Tk 1868 crore project of the construction work of 600-meter Long  PTC at Chittagong Sea Port saying the government has taken up all out measures to enhance the port's productivity through an optimal utilization of operational activities on Friday morning.
Addressing the foundation laying ceremony of Patenga Container of Chittagong port as chief guest Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan MP said, "Chittagong port is the prime sea port of Bangladesh, which circulates the blood in the economy of Bangladesh. "The circulation of blood to the country's economy remained slow earlier but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government has taken steps to make the process faster by increasing the port facilities," he added.
He added that , "Our Prime Minister has proved that she is an able leader to rule the country and only an able leader can save the country from any accident."  While addressing the function, the Shipping Minister also called upon the opposition the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to participate in the next national polls to prove their popularity.
However, he has also mentioned that presently the people of Bangladesh are against the BNP for the violence they committed in the name of political protests earlier. "People will cast votes for the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina again in the next national poll," he added.
Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Rear Admiral Khaled Ikbal presided over the foundation laying ceremony.
Among others, M A Latif MP, Chief of Engineering Department of Bangladesh Army Major General Engineer Siddikur Rahman Sarkar and President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahabubul Alam were present at the function as special guests.
Sources said CPA had received formal administrative approval for constructing a new container terminal at Patenga in Chittagong in July last as June 13, 2017 the Ministry of Shipping gave the administrative approval to the project. The cost for the new terminal has been estimated at Tk 1,868 crore. The money will be spent from CPA's own found. The construction work of the container terminal is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
The CPA expects that ship congestion at the port will be reduced once the container terminal construction will be completed. Currently, a ship has to wait seven to ten days at the outer-anchorage of Chittagong port for berthing and for everyday a ship has to count $8,000 to $12,000 as demurrage for waiting at the outer-anchorage, which has negative economic impacts on import of goods.
