Potholes in city roads

TORRENTIAL rain over the past few days has left city roads muddy and inundated at many points. Countless potholes have formed in busy roads with pools of rainwater is making movement of transport difficult. Even one can't step out from homes in lanes and by-lanes for water logging at low lying places.

Commuters and pedestrians are facing miseries almost every day in inclement weather and needless to say, this sorry state of our city streets has made movement within the city a nightmarish experience. Damaged roads are causing unimaginable risks to passengers safety and public and private transports.

Despite the worsening situation, the authorities concerned appear as indifferent as ever. The two City Corporations have a total of 2,340 kilometers of roads and two-thirds of it are directly and indirectly damaged by intermittent rains and lack of regular maintenance. Stagnant water is making the situation further worse.

It is known to all that poor maintenance, substandard materials used in city road construction, indiscriminate and unplanned digging of roads by different agencies responsible for dilapidated city road condition. But what is painstaking is that despite our repeated calls to improve the standard of work and its maintenance it is falling in deaf ears. Poorly coordinated construction works coupled with unapproved movement of heavy vehicles on city roads are also aggravating the situation.

The situation is horrific, particularly over a dozen city blocs like Badda, Rampura, Banasree, Malibagh, Khilgaon, Goran and Mirpur. The DIT road from Malibagh to Rampura has become almost a death trap dotted with countless ditches, potholes and craters nearly three feet deep at some places.

The point, however, if our authorities concerned are incapable to remove the sorry state of city roads they must admit it and admit it quickly. If necessary, they should handover responsibilities to third parties who can better deliver. From a realistic point of view, it is better than continuing to fail over the years. The big problem is however big corruption that need to be overcome and misuse of funds by concerned officials and contractors that need to be overhauled. People start repair and maintenance and laying of pipelines in late rainy season that only aggravate the situation rather improving it. They are grabbing money and since there is no proper monitoring and accountability the city sewerage system is faltering to drain out stagnant water. This in turn is creating more potholes and ditches all over.

We have published editorials on many occasions to make city roads and sewerage system efficient for quick disposal of stagnant water but vested interest groups are using such work as a source of minting illegal fortune. The big responsibility for failure however goes to the government leadership and if they continue to shelter corruption and mismanagement, we are afraid the situation will never improve.
