Staff Reporter :
Leaders of Bangladesh Health Assistant Association (BHAA) have demanded the authorities concerned to accept its four-point demands immediately. Otherwise, they warned that the association would go for movement to materialise their demands.
They made the warning while speaking at a press briefing at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday.
The demands include fixing salary, scale for technical post by removing discrimination, 30 per cent of basic for tour and risk allowance, ensuring appointment of one assistant against six thousand people and introduce 10 per cent quota system.
BHAA President Anayet Rabbi presided over the programme while Senior Vice-President Abul Oaresh Pasha Polash, General Secretary M Zakaria Hossain, Organising Secretary Noor Nabi, among others, were present.
The BHAA leaders said if their demands are not met by December 31 they will go for tougher movement, including shutting down of the implementation of EPI activities.
They also pointed out that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had announced to take initiative to resolve salary and post discrimination in the health sector at a rally organised by Bangladesh Field Level Health Employees Association at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on December 6, 1998.
Although the decision was taken at several high level committees comprising representatives of the Health Department, Finance, Public Administration and Health Ministry, it has not been implemented yet, they said.
They claimed that the field level health assistants are playing an important role in reducing child and maternal death, tuberculosis, tetanus, diarrhoea, malaria, infectious and non- infectious diseases and removing blindness.
Besides, the health sector people achieved worldwide reputation for eliminating Chickenpox, Polio, making Polio free Bangladesh and completing MRI campaign, the largest world health activities successfully, they added.
They said Bangladesh has become champion and role model in the 12 south-east Asian countries for the EPI activities of the health assistants.
The successful works of the health assistants are appreciated worldwide. For this, Prime Minister has achieved different rewards in health sector, including MDG and South-South awards, they mentioned.
According to the World Health Organization and local experts, though the health works are technical, the health assistants have been demanding technical status for long. The government is yet to implement their demand.
Thus the health assistants are being victimized of post discrimination, they alleged.
