A market owner at Shanir Akhra has allegedly broken down a concrete stair (footstep) near Gobindapur Bazar on Dhaka-Chittagong highway constructed by the Roads and Highway Department to extend his market area.
The people of the area used this stair to go to Shanir Akhra bus stand, nearby Gobindapur Bazar and other adjacent areas as this point of the highway is quite high from the plain.
It was alleged that the owner of the market -- Silver Rain Tower - broke down the stair illegally with an ulterior motive to extend his market up to that point. It is situated at Gobindapur, few yards east of Shanir Akhra bus stand under Jatrabari Police Station.
This correspondent has found that the owner of the market broke down the concrete stair from its middle point.  
"The stair was used by huge numbers of people everyday to go up and down of the highway from the nearby areas. Now the people of the area cannot go down or go up from Gobindapur bazar and
other adjacent areas in the absence of the stair," said Manik, a resident of the area.
"The market owner is using tricks to compel people to use the market's own stair that is also connected with the highway. In this way, the owner is compelling people to come inside the market on way to go up to the highway or go down to it," alleged Ahmedullah, another resident of the area.  
Some pedestrians alleged that the market owner is very influential. So, he does not care the administration. That is why he is still untouched even after breaking down the stair constructed by the highway using the government fund.
They said people of the area protested while the market owner started to break down the stair. "Even scuffle also occurred, but the market owner finally did it."
When contacted, Khan Mohammad Bilal, the Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), said, "I have no information about the matter. I have to give directives to Sayedabad Zonal office of DSCC to take necessary steps in this regard."
He said no one has any right to stop people from their freedom of movement. The locals should inform the nearby Police Station to apply law in this regard.
When contacted, Anisur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station, said, "No one yet submitted any allegation in this regard. If any one submit any allegation, we must take action as per the rules."
