Suhrawardy`s 54th death anniv today

The 54th death anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy will be observed in the country today (Tuesday).
The unparallel leader of all Indian politics, who had dedicated his entire life to ensure the welfare of the people by upholding democracy, died at a Beirut hotel in Lebanon on this day (December 5) in 1963. He was alone in the hotel suite at the time of his death.
Suhrawardy was a Bengali politician and statesman in the first half of the 20th-century.
He served as the Premier of Bengal in British India and was the fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Different political, socio-cultural and professional organisations have taken elaborate programmes on the occasion.
The programmes include placing wreaths at the grave of the great leader, discussions, Qurankhwani, Milad and Doa Mahfil.
Meanwhile, President  Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
In his message, the President said Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy is a unique name in the history of politics and democracy in the sub-continent.
He said the nation remembers with due respect the contributions of Suhrawardy to establishing and flourishing democracy, and developing socio-economic condition of the people of this region.
The President expressed his belief that the life and works of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy will encourage the future generation to devote themselves in democratic spirit and people's welfare.
In her message, the Prime Minister said Suhrawardy worked throughout his life for establishing democratic rights of the people and flourishing non-communal politics.
He was vociferous in the struggle for socio-economic development of the Muslims in the subcontinent and upholding their political rights, she added.
The Prime Minister said mass people's organisation Awami League had flourished further under the skilled leadership of Suhrawardy.
Under the leadership of his successor Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bangalee of All Time, Bangladesh achieved its independence, she added. Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was born in a respectable Muslim family at Medinipur in West Bengal on September 8 in 1892.
