Growth exceeds 33pc last year

After achieving a success of increasing manpower export by 33 percent in the year of 2017, the Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry has set a target of 20 percent growth in the sector in the new year of 2018.
In 2017, Bangladesh has made a new record by sending 10,08,525 persons to abroad with employment while it was 7,57,731 persons in 2016. In 2018, Bangladesh's target of manpower export to abroad with employment is 12 lakh, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam told reporters about the target while addressing a press briefing at the ministry in Eskaton on Wednesday.
The press conference was organized to brief media about the ministry's achievement in manpower export last year, earning of remittances and announcement of its new target for the new year of 2018.
"In 2017, the government earned around US$ 13,527 million - equivalent to Tk1,10,247 crore - as remittance from the expatriate workers working in 165 countries. Since 1975 to 2017, total 1,14,64,943 Bangladeshis have gone abroad for jobs and earned Tk 12,35,606 crore," he added.
Among the Bangladeshi migrants employed in various countries, 5,51,308 were sent to Saudi Arabia, 99,787 to Malaysia, 89,074 to Oman, 82012 to Qatar and 49,604 to Kuwait.
A total of 1,21,941 Bangladeshi women have migrated to various countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Oman. Of them, 83,354 were sent to Saudi Arabia, 19,872 to Jordan and 9,199 persons were sent to Oman.
Nurul Islam said, "The ministry is also working to explore new market for overseas employment. A research is this regard on its final stage. The research was conducted visiting 12 countries and accumulating information from 42 countries."
The process of signing agreements to send workers in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan, Mauritius and Russia is also on the last stage. As per the order of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina all the expatriate workers will be brought under insurance service, he said.
He said that in 2017, a total 6,271 persons were given around Tk 77.51 crore as migration loan. At the same time, five persons were given rehabilitation loan from the Probashi Kalyan Bank.
In last year, the government brought 3,429 dead bodies of the expatriate workers back from different countries. Of those, 3,263 families of the dead migrants were given Tk 11.41 core. Each of the families was given Tk 35,000 as transport cost and burying the bodies to their villages.
