Don't invite unnecessary trouble

MORE than 500 big trees besides Airport Road have been axed by Dhaka North City Corporation apparently without any knowledge of Roads and Highways Department, whose territory begins from Banani flyover. As per rules, it is mandatory to take clearance from RHD's Dhaka Circle if any department wants to conduct any development work on this road. But the DNCC uprooted all the big trees stretching from Le Meridian Hotel to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday night keeping the RHD in the dark. On Saturday morning, these trees were cut into pieces to take away to a safe place. DNCC claimed the trees have been axed to implement the U-loop project that has taken to reduce traffic jam on the road.

The officials of Department of Forest alleged that DNCC earlier had tried to cut down the trees but it failed due to severe objection from RHD. So, this time the DNCC did not waste any time to take permission from RHD. The RHD is reportedly taking preparations to file case against DNCC in this connection.

We think, it is nothing but lack of coordination between the government departments.  It may become necessary to cut down trees in any part of the country, if the authorities want to reconstruct or expand the roads. But there must be some rules and regulations. Now what we see, different utility service providers and organizations execute their development works in a free style on the city roads. The unplanned and haphazard road digging may be a bright example of it. These departments even do not care to inform other bodies. As a result, the development work turns into a hotchpotch. It's a common scenario in each and every year, not only in Dhaka but also in every city.

The arrogant attitude of DNCC not only has damaged the scenic beauty of the road but also has invited unnecessary legal hassle. This would certainly delay the U-loop project. And obviously, it will increase the sufferings of general people.

Both the organizations should negotiate the matter for the sake of greater public interest - the sooner the better.
