M M Jasim :
Two educationists of Dhaka University on Monday said, 56 percent quota system creates discrimination among the job seekers. It should not be more than 10 per cent.
The movement of the students and the job seekers demanding reformation of the existing quota system is
logical. The meritorious students are deprived of getting their appropriate job due to the 56 per cent quota system. It should not be over 10 per cent in any government job, they said.
Professor Syed Anwar Hussain of History Department of Dhaka University told The New Nation on Monday that 56 per cent quota system is contradictory with the spirit of the Liberation War as the freedom fighters had fought against discrimination. The quota system should not be more than 10 per cent.
"The students' movement for quota reformation is absolutely logical. They are demonstrating against discrimination of quota system," Syed Anwar said.
He said, "I condemn the police attack on the demonstrating students and job seekers. They can't do such act against the students."
Syed Anwar also criticised vandalising and torching the DU VC's residence. It was not wise.
"I have heard that the government has taken initiative to resolve the problem. It is a good sign. But it will depend on the final decision of the government," he said.
Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam of English Department of Dhaka University said, the demonstrating youths are on right point. It is high time to rethink about the demands of the students.
"It is impossible to build digital and developed Bangladesh without the youths. So, the discriminatory quota system should be reformed in the interest of the country," he said.
Syed Manzoorul Islam said, there are many fake freedom fighters in the country now. They are amusing facilities of the quota system. Thirty per cent quota for the freedom fighters should be reduced. It can be 10-20 per cent.
Female quota and district quota can be reduced, he said.
He said, "The general students have been demanding reformation of the quota system for long time. The government failed to take step to resolve the problem. It has also sat with the students, but it is late."
"The government should express democratic attitude in resolving the matter. It needs open mind discussion from the both sides," added Syed Manzoorul Islam.
He also said, the government has no right to deprive the meritorious students of getting their proper jobs in the government institutions.
