Reza Mahmud :
An appalling condition of public and private buses in the city transport system is causing untold sufferings to the passengers, it was alleged.
The commuters said, most bus windows are empty of glasses, while others have broken glass. In rainy days the passengers suffer from rainwater. In dry days, they suffer from dust of the air. And in the winter, they suffer from cold air at night and morning.
Contacted, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, told The New Nation on Friday,"66 per cent window glasses of the city buses are broken and 93 percent of the buses are without fan. Besides, seats are also damaged and broken. But owners are indifferent. They are only after money. There is no body to take care and solve those problems."
He said, his organization repeatedly urged the government and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to survey and take steps but ignored.
"Broken and haldf broken glasses are a common scenario posing danger to passengers' safety," said Haider Chowdhury, a private service holder in the city's Paltan area.
When contacted, Khondaker Enayet Ullah, Secretary General of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity, told The New Nation, "Surely there are some problems in the sector. We honestly want to solve those."
Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said his organization has surveyed over 1000 buses recently.
It found most of the buses are running in bad shape. Seat covers are very dirty. Most buses have no headlight. Some headlights are broken.
Most buses have congested seats, he said.
Numbers of buses has no rear glasses to watch the backside vehicles on running condition. This is why the vehicles often lock in clashes with each other and passengers got injured and even killed.
Buses running without ceiling fan cause immense sufferings to people in hot weather.
Even drivers in many buses put the fan's switches off with little care to passengers' sufferings.
"We suffer from serious hot temperature but fans of the buses remained switched off. When we asked fan, drivers and helper start indecent languages," said Kalam Hossain, a private job holder at Motijheel after getting off a bus from Savar.
Another passenger Selina Parveen who came from Mirpur to Motijheel also made the same allegation.
She also said, windows without or partly broken glasses cause huge sufferings to passengers, especially in rainy and winter days.
"There was no glass in windows of the bus we commuted for one hour. Suddenly rain has started. The rainwater was falling directly through the windows upon us.  That made us wet. Then we discovered that the windows are empty of glasses. I have to go to office and stay for long time with the wet dress," she said.
Many passengers, including female and children, were also compelled to stay in the wet cloths.
The passengers in different routes also blame poor and hazardous conditions of public transports, causing suffering in their daily life.
Some of the passengers commuting in private buses in the city regularly said, the seat covers of most of the buses are often untouchable and dirty.
In the hot and rainy days, those seats covers found mostly wet from humidity, it is very painful for the passengers to use.
On the other hand, many buses have no seat cushion. But it is compulsory to keep the seats with cushions.
According to Jatri Kalyan Samity, around 15 percent buses has no cushion.
Backside seats of many buses are in dangerous conditions with pins and tin exposed to cause injury.
