Water-logging causes mass sufferings in city

Heavy rainfall caused acute water-logging in the capital city Dhaka on Sunday morning and thereby wrapped up the residents with untold sufferings.
"Half an hour's rainfall created huge water logging at Jurain, Gendaria and Dayaganj and adjacent areas. Water even rose to the height of ankle in many houses of these areas. Unclean drains were the main reason of the water logging. The city corporation employees are liable for these sufferings of people," said Humayun Kabir from Gendariya Rail Way Station area.
According to the Dhaka Met Office, the capital on Sunday experienced the highest rainfall of 55 mm of this monsoon as nor'wester along with thunderstorm lashing the city.
Met office said, the maximum speed of wind was recorded 76 km- second highest of this month in Dhaka.
The seasonal storm hit around 8:30am in Dhaka with a downpour causing huge waterlogging of many major roads of the capital.
In DSCC's Rapa Plaza, Dhanmondi, Staff Quarter, Kathalbagan, Gastroliver Gali, Kalabagan Dolphin   Gali, Green Road, Jigatala, Dholayakhal, Azimpur, Hazaribagh, Shantinagar, Malibag, Mouchak, Segunbagicha, Paltan, Bailey Road, Siddheswari, Circuit House Road, Rajarbagh, Shantibagh, Arambagh, Motijheel, Dilkusha, Bangabhaban area, Kamalapur, Manik Nagar, Bashabo, Mugda, New Market, BGB-3 and 4 Gate, Nazimuddin Road, Hossaini Dalan, Chawkbazar, Lalbagh, Kazi Alauddin Road, Bangshal, Jurain, Postagola, Muradpur, Shampur, Kadamtala, Matuail, Jatrabari, Demra, Shanir Akhara, Sheikh, Dania, Dayaganj Railway Bridge area were inundated.
Water logging was also found in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC)'s Kazipara, Shewarpara, Kalshi, Mirpur 11 and 12, Kalyanpur, Katasur, Ibrahimpur, Khilkhate, Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Mohammadpur Housing, Nabodaya Housing and some other areas.
Khandakar Millatul Islam, the Additional Waste Management Officer said, "Emergency response team of DSCC rushed the water-logging areas after the rain and cleared the drains."
Meanwhile the Chief Executive Officer and Acting Mayor of the DNCC did not receive phone calls.
Nijhum Rokeya Ahmed, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the office recorded 55mm rainfall in the morning.
The incessant rains caused water-logging and paralised city life as the employers of private firms failed to get office in time.
The heavy rain and nor'wester disrupted transports normal movement as some buses overturned at Savar, Karwan Bazar and other areas during Sunday's nor'wester.
At least 14 people were reportedly killed in lightning during the thunderstorm across the country. 
Met offices said, in Rajshahi, norwester lashed at 5:00am early morning while moderate rainfall was experienced the other northern districts Pabna, Sirajganj, Naogaon, Natore.
It also said that in Mymensingh the rainfall was recorded 69 mm while moderate rainfall was experienced in Tangail, Jamalpur, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Shariatpur, Madaripur other distcrits. The met office also issued nor'wester warning in their website and said that in next few days country could experience heavy rain fall.
More than 88 mm of rainfall count as heavy rainfall.
According to Met offices, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind with lightning flashes is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Barisal and Chittagong divisions with hails at isolated places over the country.
