Staff Reporter :
Five revenge killing took place in brush fire yesterday from the funeral procession of
Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, chairman of Naniarchar Upazila Parishad of Rangamati of Chittagong Hill Tracts, who was killed by miscreant on Thursday.
Seven others were also injured in the fire. It was a highly charged political killing as a  sequence of rivalry between Parbattya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samity and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in their bid to maintain control over local body politics.
A similar killing of a Union Parishad chairman at Norshingdhi; who was six times
elected popular chairman in the area has also left the situation highly tense as people fear  retaliatory attack on the rivals any time. Sensational political killings are making many to fear about their safety all over the country as the law and order situation is rapidly deteriorating.
At Naniarchar Upazila five were killed in brush fire on Friday morning when people were taking the body of Shaktiman Chakma to the funeral site for cremation.  His supporters opened brush at a microbus from the funeral procession.
The five deceased have been identified as Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Barma (40), Setulal Chakma (41) Kanak Chakma (38) and Sujon Chakma (30) of Mahalchhari, and Bengali Sajib (34), a microbus driver of Khagrachharhi's Panchharhi.
The seven injured are Jeevan Chakma (30), Orchin Chakma (28), Arjun Chakma (30) and Mihir Chakmaar (28) were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital due to their critical condition.
"The assailants opened fire indiscriminately at a microbus by which the victims
were travelling to Naniarchar" said Md Jahangir Alam, assistant superintendent of police (sadar circle) in Rangamati.
OC of Naniarchar police station Abdul Latif said that the attack took place at Beetchhari area around 12pm. Eyewitnesses said the victims were also going to attend the funeral of Shaktiman Chakma as his well wishers but his supporters acted to take revenge.
The miscreants opened the attack before reaching funeral spot at the area on the Rangamati-Khagrachari border in Beetchari area.
The attackers first fired at the microbus driver Sajeeb. When the driver was shot, the car turned down. Then the miscreants simultaneously fired on the passengers of the microbus.
On the spot, UPDF (democratic) chief Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Barma, Kanak Chakma and Sujan Chakma were killed. Their bodies were taken to Rangamati Sadar Hospital, police said.
On the other hand, the rest were taken to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital where driver Sajib and Setu Lal Chakma died. Their bodies were kept in the hospital.
Naniarkar OC Abdul Latif said, the police and army personnel reached the spot after the attack and rescued the injured and took them to the hospital.
He said that three of the dead were killed in the scene and the driver and another died at Khagrachari district hospital.
On Thursday morning, Shaktiman Chakma was shot dead by miscreants while going to office. He deserted Chittagong Hill Tracts Jana Sanghati Samity in 2010 under the leadership of Santu Larma and joined a new group named Chittagong Hill Tracts Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma).
The reformist leader was the vice-president of the organization's central committee.
