Reza Mahmud :
The BNP is collecting all the irregularities that are taking place in the Khulna and Gazipur city corporations' elections to present those before the media and development partners to create pressure for fair general polls.
"We have landed in Dhaka now after visiting Khulna City Corporation for ten days. There is no level playing field in Khulna. The same thing we have found in Gazipur. The police are arresting BNP men and making obstacles to the party's mayoral candidate's campaigns," BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy told The New Nation on Friday.
He said the law enforcers have arrested 19 vital leaders in Khulna who are reliable for our mayor candidate's campaign without any acceptable reason.
But the Election Commission is ignoring the BNP's allegations in this regard. It is also avoiding the BNP's allegations against the ruling Awami League candidates' irregularities and police administration's
partisan steps in the both cities.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy along with other leaders from BNP and its 20-party alliance took part in the Khulna City Corporation polls campaign for their party nominated mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Monju for ten days till Thursday.
During the period, they also collected evidences of every action taken by the police administration and the EC.
Gayeshwar said, other leaders of the party also joined Gazipur City Corporation polls' campaign in several times in favour of the party nominated mayor candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker. They also are collected evidences besides taking part of the campaigns.
When contacted, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday told The New Nation, "We have been collecting all the evidences about the serious irregularities of the ruling party and the administration during the ongoing campaign of the Gazipur and Khulna city corporation polls. We are also taking evidences about the EC's ignorance regarding the BNP candidates' allegations. All the evidences will be submitted before the nation as well as we will expose those before media frequently."
He said, the EC claimed that they are ready to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and neutral manner.
Senior leaders of the party said, they are taking the city polls as a test case for the EC as well for the government.
They said the BNP always found the Awami League government not pro- democratic force, especially during any polls.
But they want to see how the ruling party plays its role in the city polls ahead of the national election.
The party leaders said they have taken part in the city polls for three vital reasons.
Firstly, to prove the party's popularity if the election is held in a free, fair and peaceful atmosphere.
Secondly, to observe the ruling party and the EC's attitude in the city polls to asses their motives about the next general election.  Thirdly, to point out the government and the EC's irregularities in holding the city polls.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said, "What we found in Khulna, most of the voters are in favour of BNP candidate. If the EC and the government can hold a fair poll then there is no reason to defeat of Monju." He said, if the EC fails to hold fair polls in the two city corporations the people of the country will not accept it. They then must demand to form a new and neutral EC for a fair national election.
The senior leaders of the party also sat in a meeting at its chairperson's Gulshan office on Friday afternoon.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presided over the meeting.
They discussed various strategies on forthcoming city polls. They also discussed the ongoing movement to free its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
