Staff Reporter :
Pro-BNP lawyers staged a sit-in programme on the Supreme Court Bar Association premises on Monday demanding immediate release of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
They hoped that the Appellate Division would grant bail to Khaleda Zia after analyzing all the case documents as well as considering her health condition.
The 'Nationalist Lawyers Forum' organized the programme.
BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed attended the programme as the chief guest while forum's SC unit President and also SCBA President Advocate Zainul Abedin was in the chair.
Forum's Central Secretary General and also SCBA Secretary Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Senior lawyers Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Golam Mostofa, Dr Golam Rahman, Sannaullah Miah, Bodruddoza Badol, Kayser Kamal, Dr Arifa Jesmine Nahin, Abed Raza and Ehsanur Rahman also spoke, among others.
Barrister Moudud said, in future the lawyers will lead the movements for establishing good governance, democracy and right to vote and they will be successful.
He also said, "The government has turned back from the Gazipur City Corporation election sensing its sure defeat. They have stopped the GCC election like Dhaka North City Corporation election."
"The government will be thrown out of power by the strong movement if they do not give the opportunity for peaceful movement. We have to do harder movement for the democracy, justice and freeing Khaleda Zia," he said.
Advocate Zainul Abedin said, "The judiciary could not function independently after the departure of former Chief Justice S K Sinha. We hope, the court will grant bail to Khaleda Zia and prove that the court is independent. We also hope that the Supreme Court will act to uphold the dignity of the independence of the higher judiciary."
Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan said, "Former Chief Justice S K Sinha was not allowed to sit on the Chair due to the ruling that went against the government. He was forced to leave the country. I think, the judiciary should act independently. We want justice. If justice is done, then the lower court could not sentence her for five years and the Appellate Division also not stayed her bail." He urged all the pro-BNP lawyers to attend the Appellate Division today (Tuesday) morning, when the bail hearing of Khaleda Zia will take place.
