Probe all cases of rights violations

UN-member states have recommended Bangladesh to thoroughly investigate all the cases of alleged abductions, enforced disappearances, tortures and extrajudicial killings taking place within law enforcement agencies and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The recommendations came at the third cycle Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights records of Bangladesh in Geneva on Monday, according to the UN Human Rights Council. A total 107 countries took the floor and praised Bangladesh's endeavours in
 fulfilling its human rights commitments. A report on Bangladesh's UPR will be finalised on May 17 containing recommendations made by countries. The states, according to the UNHRC Secretariat, recommended Bangladesh to revise media law, including Digital Security & ITC Act, to decriminalise defamation, and ensure freedom of expression also online. They recommend protecting journalists and human rights defenders from harassment and investigating violations against them.
They also expressed concern that Bangladesh continues to impose the death penalty and recommend the country to consider the imposition of a moratorium on all pending executions as first step towards the full abolition of capital punishment. The UN-member states recommended Bangladesh to continue improving Rohingya Refugees' conditions, investigate allegations of abuses and human rights violations, guarantee the principle of non-refoulement and accede to 1951 Refugee Convention. They suggested Bangladesh to guarantee freedom of association, increase the transparency of recruitment system of migrant workers to combat forced labour and human trafficking, protect female workers from exploitation in the informal sector, and eradicate child labour.
The international community has highly appreciated the remarkable humanitarian role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in providing shelter to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas and continuing humanitarian assistance to them.
The appreciation came at the third cycle Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights records of Bangladesh in Geneva on Monday, according to information gathered from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.
The member-states of the UN also commended Bangladesh for its efforts in promoting and protecting human rights for all. The 3rd Cycle of UPR for Bangladesh was held at the 30th session of Human Rights Council in Geneva. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq led the Bangladesh delegation.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, Senior Secretary of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Mohammad Shahidul Haque, Ambassador Shameem Ahsan, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva and representatives from various Ministries/Division/agencies participated in the session.
Law Minister highlighted Bangladesh's achievements in promotion and protection of human rights and socio-economic advancements, which have been achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
