Spain's ousted PM Rajoy  to quit politics
AFP, Madrid
Spain's Mariano Rajoy, who is to stand down as head of the conservative Popular Party after being ousted as prime minister last week, said Wednesday he plans to quit politics altogether.
"My intention is to definitely abandon politics, there are other things to do in life than dedicate oneself to politics," he said during an interview with radio Cadena Cope.

Plane with 10 goes missing in Kenya

Rescue teams on Wednesday were looking for a small plane with 10 people on board that went missing north of the
Kenyan capital Nairobi, the aircraft owners and the national disaster agency
said.
The plane, operated by East African Safari Air Express, took off from the
western town of Kitale in the late afternoon Tuesday.

6 Afghan soldiers killed in Taliban  attack
AP, Kabul
 An Afghan official says the Taliban have attacked an army post in the western Badghis province, killing six soldiers and wounding seven.
Abdul Aziz Beg, head of the provincial council, said the attack late Tuesday set off a two-hour gunbattle, with the insurgents stealing ammunition and two army vehicles. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Blast kills 11 in China
AP, Beijing
Rescuers pulled 23 miners to safety after a blast at an iron mine in northeast China trapped them underground and killed 11 others, the government said Wednesday.
The search was continuing for two workers still missing after explosives that were being transported to a mine blew up near the entrance Tuesday afternoon in Benxi, a city in Liaoning province, the Ministry of Emergency Management said on its website.

Train collides with sheep in Germany
AP, Berlin
 Police say a train has collided with a flock of sheep in southwestern Germany, killing some 45 animals.
Police in Konstanz, on the Swiss border, said none of the people on board the train - four passengers and the driver - was hurt in the accident at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday.
It wasn't clear how the sheep ended up on the line. The train, run by Swiss operator SBB, was on a German regional service from Singen to Engen

Gunmen kill 2 Iran border guards
AP, Tehran
Iran's official news agency says gunmen shot and killed two Iranian border guards near the border with Iraq.
IRNA says the guards, both sergeant majors, died in a shootout late Tuesday near the border town of Sardasht. It was not immediately clear who was behind the shooting, but Kurdish separatists and Islamic extremists have carried out previous attacks in the region.
