Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in the city last evening on a three-day visit to review bilateral relations and discuss how the two neighbouring countries can strengthen cooperation in sensitive areas like security, border killing, tackling terrorism and further strengthening of people to people relation, the Indian High Commission in a statement on the eve of the visit said.
Bangladesh expects India will ease the border situation and the visit will contribute to remove various hurdles on business and travels at various levels.
Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal received Rajnath Singh at Bangabandhu Air Force Base as he arrived here on invitation of Bangladesh Home Minister for a review meeting. Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla and other senior military and civilian officials were present on the occasion.
He arrived here in a special plane and will stay at Hotel Sonargaon during the visit. Rajnath will co-chair the 6th meeting of the Bangladesh-India Home Minister level talks scheduled to begin Sunday morning at the Home Ministry. The Home Minister level talks are a regular practice and the last were being held in July 2016.
The discussion this time will also reportedly cover issues related to radicalization of youths by terrorist groups, fake currencies circulation, cattle smuggling, visa issues, human trafficking, drug smuggling and Rohingya problems.
Rajnath will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday morning to discuss issues of mutual interest, an official source said. The Indian High Commission statement further said, "The visit is expected to facilitate a comprehensive review of the excellent bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh and contribute to the further strengthening of ties".
The two Ministers may also discuss proposals to make easier travel formalities between the two countries and improve the consular services. The Indian government has taken a number of measures, the statement said to simplify visa procedures for Bangladesh citizens.
It is introducing cashless submission of visa application, no requirement of e-token, long-duration visa for senior citizens, freedom fighters
and businesspeople. The Indian Home Minister along with his Bangladesh counterpart will open a huge Indian Visa Application Center at Jamuna Future Park in the city today integrating all other visa processing centers.
The occasion may also see the signing of three bilateral cooperation documents including revised travel arrangements 2018. Singh will also visit Bangladesh Police Academy on Saturday afternoon and jointly open the Bangladesh-India Friendship Building there.
He will visit Bangabandhu Museum to pay respect to the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and place floral wreaths on his portrait.
Singh will also visit Dhakeshwari Temple and offer prayers. A 12-mmber delegation consisting of Indian Home Ministry officials and senior officials of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) is accompanying the Indian Home Minister.
Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla is scheduled to host a dinner for the Indian Home Minister on Friday evening. Bangladesh Home Minister Khan will also host a dinner for Singh on Saturday evening. He is scheduled to leave Dhaka for home on Sunday afternoon.
BSS adds: Singh in a tweet on the occasion said, "Leaving for Dhaka on a three-day visit to Bangladesh. The relationship between India and Bangladesh is anchored in history, culture, language and shared values of democracy. India attaches great significance to ties with Bangladesh."
