Nobody could enjoy freedom to foil peaceful movement of students

ONCE again, the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday assaulted some students and teachers of Dhaka University to foil their human chain programme at Central Shaheed Minar demanding release of three quota reformists.
The reformist leaders Jashim and Moshiur were shown arrested in a case filed for the attack on the DU VC's residence and Faruk was shown arrested for attacking police and vandalising vehicles on April 9. The students of DU Sociology Department formed a human chain yesterday covering their face with black cloths demanding release of fellow student Moshiur Rahman.
We have no such words to condemn the attack on general students by the ruling party's student wing. Although DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told journalists that university administration will take action against the culprits, we doubt whether he has any capacity to punish the BCL activists.  The BCL men attacked general students a few more times recently when they tried to arrange any rally demanding quota reform.
Meanwhile, the PM on June 26 suggested continuation of the existing freedom fighter quota in the civil service. She also told the Parliament that it would not possible to reform the freedom fighters' quota in due to a High Court verdict. A high-powered secretarial committee has also been formed to draw a guideline on the matter.
What is worrying that, the delaying attitude of government regarding quota reformation is causing anxiety, distrust and suspicion among the common students. Besides, the arrest and remand of reformists' leaders have created an abnormal situation in the campus. We think, it will not wise for the ruling party to unleash the BCL activists to thwart the students' movement. Such attack could invite more trouble in the future.
It is surprising when DU authority has taken different initiatives to protect the campus from hooligans and outsides, at that time the unruly BCL activists are attacking general students. Every student's organization has right to arrange a peaceful movement in the campus. It's a democratic right and university authority must ensure it.  Nobody could feel free to attack and foil rally or procession of opposite thinkers. Our Constitution doesn't allow anyone to enjoy such freedom.
