Dr. Forqan Uddin Ahmed :
Kazi Nazrul Islam is the National Poet of Bangladesh. He has brought about the revolutionary changes in the spirit and style of Bengali literature and music. Nazrul belonged to the 19th century as a great poet and musician. He wrote many poems and articles to support the struggle against the British. He wrote against injustice, oppression, exploitation and violence in India  and all over the world. Kazi Nazrul Islam was concerned about the landless farmers and workers and fought against social discrimination through his writings. In this matter he was to some extent influenced by the Socialist revolution in Russia.
From the beginning of Nazrul's life, he was in intense adverse condition. He grew  up as a boy of struggle. Thus he was known as 'Dukhu Mia'. He was born in a respected Kazi family, but they became poor. He received religious education. To run  his family, the young boy Nazrul had to work as a Muazzin in the local Mosque. Though he was staying in a sorrowful condition his inherent poetic fire was  burning in his heart. He dreamt for an access to the realm of literature.
God had given him such talents to establish his name in the genre of literature. And he got the scope to contribute in all the branches of literature. In his early life, Nazrul also served in the British Indian army, but being led by the revolutionary thoughts, he left the British army and joined the press in Calcutta as a journalist to express and spread his ideologies about equity, equality, nationalism, patriotism for his country.
Being a man of revolution, he led an unique fight in literature against the British Raj in India. Through his poem like 'Bidrohi' and books 'Ognibina,' 'Bhangan Gan', and his famous publication 'Dhumketu', he showed the tireless endeavor to  spread the revolution for Independence against the British government in India. His aim was to free his country from the grip of British colonialism. All of his revolutionary writing pieces made him not only a freedom lover but also a man of truth, a great poet of the chained downtrodden people.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was deeply influenced by some of the prominent figures in literature. Rabindrath Tagore was one of the influential writer for Nazrul. Being a Bengali, Nazrul was very much attracted by the magical writings of Rabindranath Tagore. The other creative icons of Bengali literature, such as Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay  also fascinated him. Nazrul was enthralled by the person, poets and their remarkable writing pieces. Nazrul expressed his outmost praiseworthy words for Hafiz, the famous poet, Rumi, the poet of aesthetic beauty, and Omar Khayyam, the vehement poet. Under their influence he used Persian vocabulary in his writings which made the demarcation line of his writings even more wider.
Kazi Nazrul Islam, was very much active against all sorts of injustice. Through literature, journalism, political and economic vision Nazrul fought against the British colonialism and their oppressive rule, fundamentalism, communalism, society's prejudice and injustice towards poor people, women, and the outlawed people. The British government banned his books and newspaper and put him behind the prison. But Nazrul didn't stop his revolutionary activities and delivered his unique self-supporting speech  "Rajbondir Jobanbondi". After that he took 40 days, hunger strike for protesting against the harassment.  He had a deep contemplation regarding the people who were facing poverty and misery. All these significant affairs were reflected in his writings. 'Daridryo' is one of the social awakening poems where Nazrul had depicted his pain for the people of his country. Like this poem, Nazrul has written another significant poem on women's right and showed his personal respect to them. 'Nari' is one of the effective poem to show the respect and his thought to establish the parity between men and women's right.
Religius issue was one of the prominent subject in Nazrul's writings. He has written on  Islamic and Hindu values. This fusion was the ideologies of Nazrul, which he has made with both Islam and Hinduism. He fought for Hindu-Muslim unity. His liberal outlook led him to  choose his son's names from both Hindu and Muslim heritage.
Kazi Nazrul Islam is  popularly known as the 'Rebel Poet'. His rebellion  was not only for Bangladesh but also for the whole world. His fierce resistance towards all forms of oppression, injustice has been expressed enormously in his poems, short stories, songs and essays. Nazrul has created the vibrant rhythms and iconoclastic themes, formed a revolutionary and worthy contrast to the contemporary poets. His use of vocabulary and subjects were never been in the history of Bengali poetry before. He became immensely popular for portraying his poems with the issues of political and social matters. Nazrul was also known as a poet of unprecedented activities such as the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultural traditions. In the field of mixing the Bangla metres with Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit, Nazrul nourished almost all the streams of Bengali literature and generated the solid foundation in the history of world literature.
Nazrul by style and sprit was a Rebel Poet as well as great  classic and romatic. He could foster the whole nation when people are under dark and superstitions during the colonial role. Kazi Nazrul Islam awakened the sleeping country to move towards an enlightening society, liberalism & socialism. The people were highly inspired by his ideologies. They dedicated their struggle for liberation utilizing their head, heart and hands. If the thought of our National Poet is up-held, Bangladesh will no more be disadvataged or in adverse position. The country will advance to the destination of the developed world very soon.
