A MOBILE court yesterday fined three private hospitals including Anwar Khan Modern Hospital in Dhanmondi a total of Tk 27 lakh for using outdated reagents, surgical items and other irregularities.

Newspaper reports said the mobile court team of RAB-2 along with Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) and Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) launched the day-long drive in the three hospitals. Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam said, Anwar Khan Modern Hospital was fined Tk 8 lakh, Dhanmondi General and Kidney Hospital Ltd was fined Tk 9 lakh and Panorama Hospital Ltd Tk 10 lakh respectively, who led the drive.
According to the report, during the drive at Anwar Khan Modern Hospital, the team found some expired reagents in the pathology lab and surgical items which expired in 2015, Sarwar Alam said. The mobile-court team found expired medicines at the Operation theatre of Dhanmondi General and Kidney Hospital. They also found to have faked signature of pathologist in the medical report, realise excess medical bill and for wrongly testing the blood-groups of patients, the official added. The team also recovered a large number of expired medicines, surgical items and saline from the Operation theatre of Panorama Hospital in Dhanmondi.
These are no new incidents at all. There is no hope that such incidents will come to end under the present regime. The  poor  performance  of  the  health  care sector was attributed to the following: Critical staff are absent, essential  supplies  are  generally  unavailable,  facilities  are inadequate, and the quality of staffing is poor. The problems of supervision and accountability exacerbate the problems and if corrupt practices are added to the list, it is not difficult to imagine the aggravating predicament of the patients.
We often see that, some private hospitals and clinic do not follow the proper line of heath service. There was an expectation that since  private  hospitals  are  not  subsidized  and  depend  on  income from clients, they would be more motivated than public hospitals to provide quality services to patients to meet their needs more effectively and efficiently. But this is not happening in purely local private hospital except one or two.
The condition of our public hospitals is dismal. The doctors are spending more time in doing their private practice. The poor ones are depending mostly on financial help of others  for treatment. Luckily there are some good charitable small hospital trying to help the poor patients.
Please if the government hospitals cannot be run properly for the benefit of poor patients then they should be shut along with the ministry of health.
