The Election Commission (EC) yesterday declared as many as 80 nominations valid and rejected 77 after hearing review petitions filed by aggrieved candidates whose nominations were initially rejected by the election officials during scrutiny.
BNP's heavyweight candidates Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin (Chattogram-5), Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar Dulu (Natore-2) and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku's (Sirajganj-2)  nominations were rejected by the EC.
During hearing, Nasir's appeal was rejected for conviction in a lawsuit, Dulu in two criminal cases while Tuku in a corruption case.  
On the first day, the Commission heard 160 petitions. Of them, 80 were approved, 78 rejected and two others remained pending, said the Commission's Joint Secretary (Public Relation) SM Asaduzzaman.
"The three pending appeals will be resolved by Saturday," he added.
UNB adds: The 80 aspirants who got back their candidatures include BNP's 39, AL's 1, Jatiya Party's 8, Gano Forum's 1, LDP's 2, Zaker Party's 6, NPP's 1, Bangladesh Islami Front's 2, Islami Oikyajote's 2, Bangladesh Muslim League's 1, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's 2, Muslim League's 2 and independent 13.
On completion of the first-day hearing, BNP got back their single candidates in four constituencies-Bogura-7, Jamalpur-4, Manikganj-2 and Dhaka-1 - after the Election Commission cleared its aspirants' candidature for the parliamentary seats.
The Commission started its three-day hearing at 10am on Thursday over petitions filed against the decision for the returning officers over the rejection and acceptance for nomination papers in different constituencies.     
Now, BNP's valid contestants for the four constituencies are Morshed Milton for Bogura-7, Faridul Kabir Talukder (Shamim) for Jamalpur-4, Abidur Rahman Khan for Manikganj-2 and Khandaker Abu Ashfaq for Dhaka-1.
Ruling Awami League fielded no candidate for 36 constituencies, while BNP for five parliamentary seats in the 11th national election slated for December 30.
During Sunday's scrutiny of nomination papers by the returning officers, all BNP aspirants lost their candidature in six constituencies-Sunamganj-3, Manikganj-2, Jamalpur-4, Pabna-1, Bogura-7 and Dhaka-1, while AL aspirants in three constituencies-Kurigram-4, Satkhira-1 and Narayanganj-3.
The rest 35 BNP aspirants are Tamij Uddin for Dhaka-20, Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman for Kishoreganj-2 , Golam Maula Rony for Patuakhali-3, Abdul Majid for Jhenaidah-2,Mohammad Shahjahan for Patuakhali-3, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury for Sylhet-3,Fazlur Rahman for Joypurhat-1, Hasadul Islam for Pabna-3, Ainul Haque for Sirajganj-3, Abdul Wahab for Jhenaidah-1, Joynal Abedin for Mymensingh-7, AKM Mukhlesur Rahman for Sherpur-2, Selim Bhuiyan for Dhaka-5, Tozammel Haque for Manikganj-1, Ahammad Taibur Rahman for Mymensingh-3, Abu Asif Ahmed for Brahmanbaria-2, Syed Abu Bakar Siddique for Dhaka-14, Abdul Khaleque for Kurigram-3, Nurul Amin for Chattogram-1,Mostafa Kamal Pasha for Chattogram-3, M Yunus for Cumilla-5, Rafiqul Islam for Gaibandha-3, Nazemul Islam Prodhan for Gaibandha-5, Abdullah Al Mamun for Sirajganj-5, Abdul Aziz for Natore-4, MA Muhith for Sirajganj-6, Monzur Kader for Sirajganj-5, Aminul Haque for Rajshahi-1, Md Hanif for Dinajpur-1, Ershad Ullah for Chattogram-8, SM Shafiqul Alam for Khulna-6, KM Mujibul Haque for Cumilla-3, Syed Jahangir Alam for Dinajpur-3,Forhad Hossain Azad for Panchagarh-2 and Ataur Rahman for Manikganj-3.
Other valid candidates declared by the EC include Awami League's Abdul Mannan for Jhenaidah-4, Jatiya Party aspirants Alauddin Mridha for Natore-4, Kamruzzaman Swadhin for Jhenaidah-3, Mahbub Alam and Joynal Abedin for Gazipur-2,Jahirul Islam Mintu for Madaripur-1, Abdullah Al Helal for Brahmanbaria-3,Mamunur Rashid for Brahmanbaria-5 and Jasmine Noor Baby for Brahmanbaria-6.
The valid candidates also include Gano Forum's Mahfuzar Rahman for Kurigram-4, Liberal Democratic Party's Niamul Bashir for Chandpur-5 and MA Bashar for Mymensingh 8,Zaker Party's Zakir Hossain for Dhaka-14, Shah Alam for Kurigram-4, Mustafa Selim for Rangpur-4, Tajul Islam for Cumilla-11, Sayeduzzaman for Jashore-6 and Mohammad Foysal Bin Shafique for Bogura-6, National Peoples' Party's Sumon Sanyamat for Patuakhali-1, Bangladesh Islami Front's Sulaiman Khan Rabbani for Habiganj-4 and Jubair Ahmed for Habiganj-1, Islami Oikyajote's Shah Alam for Cumilla-5, ASM Abdur Rab's Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal's Fakir Shawkat Ali for Narail-2 and Afsar Ali for Satkhira-2, Bangladesh Muslim League's Shafiqul Islam for Bogura-2, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Abdur Rahman for Sirajganj-4 and Syed Anwar Ahammad Liton for Brahmanbaria-3, and Muslim League's Habibur Rahman for Sirajganj-6 and Anisur Rahman for Chattogram-10.
Besides, the rest valid ones are independent candidates Yunus Ali for Kurigram-4, Asaduzzaman for Rangpur-1, Jahirul Islam for Chattogram-16, Abu Zafar for Gaibandha-3, Abdur Rauf Mondal for Bogura-5, Anisuzzaman and Moazzem Hossain for Barishal-2, Abu Bakar Siddique for Mymensingh-2, Foyzul Munir Chowdhury for Sylhet-5, Mokhlesur Rahman and Ashraf Uddin for Brahmanbaria-2, Abdur Rahim Sarkar for Gaibandha-4 and Mahbub Alam for Lakshmipur-1.
The EC kept its decisions pending over the three candidatures - independent Iman Ali andAbid Al Alvi for Kurigram-4 and BNP's Shamsul Alam for Chattogram-9.
Besides, the EC rejected two petitions filed challenging the validity of two candidaturesfor Dinajpur-4 and Nilphamari-4.
The EC turned down some 75 petitions filed to get back their candidatures, while it dismissed two other petitions submitted seeking the scrap of candidature.
Of them, the heavyweight aspirants include BNP's Mir Mohammad Nasir for Chattogram-5, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud for Sirajganj-2, Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu for Natore-2, Sabira Sultana for Jashore-2, Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan for Khagrachhari, Towhidul Islam for Panchagarh-1 and AKM Mahbubur Rahman for Bogura-6.
The EC will dispose of 150 petitions on Friday and the remaining 233 will be sorted out on Saturday.
A total of 543 petitions were filed with the Election Commission within the three-day window till Wednesday challenging the decisions for returning officers over the rejection and acceptance for nomination papers submitted by aspirants to contest the next national election slated for December 30.
The EC will dispose 150 petitions on Friday and the remaining 233 on Saturday.
ROs on Sunday accepted a total of 2,279 nomination papers after scrutiny. They rejected 786, submitted across the country's 300 Constituencies, to contest in the 11th Parliamentary Election.
