Staff Reporter :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the Home Ministry to consider whether elderly and disable convicts can be freed from imprisonment.
"Upon direction of the premier, the matter will be looked into whether elderly and disable persons can be stripped off imprisonment," Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said this while talking to the reporters after a meeting at the secretariat on Thursday.
"An agency is working on the matter so that any innocent person doesn't serve jail," the minister said. The government will consider after getting the final report from the agency, he added.
Meanwhile, the minister claimed in a program at his office the same day that that  law enforcing agencies have taken four-tier security measures in the areas around Central Shaheed Minar ahead of Amar Ekushey and  International Mother Language Day on February 21.
Shaheed Minar, Dhaka University and Nilkhet areas will be brought under CCTV cameras from the night of February 20 on security grounds," the minister said while talking to reporters after a meeting at Secretariat in the afternoon.
Special security measures will be taken for the President, Prime Minister and foreign diplomats when they go to Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the language martyrs, he said.
Vehicle movements will be restricted in the area and no vehicles without Dhaka University sticker will be allowed in the area on the day, he said.
Some roads around Shaheed Minar will be closed from 8:00pm on February 20 and it will continue till the next day, the minister said.
