AL announces names of 87 chairman candidates

Ruling Awami League has announced the names of 87 chairman aspirants who want to contest the first-phase upazila elections to be held on March 10.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader revealed the names of the chairman candidates at a press briefing held at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi on Saturday.
Earlier on Friday, a joint meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Board and its Local Government Nomination board finalised the names at a meeting with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On February 4, Awami League started the sale of nomination papers to those who want to contest the first-phase upazila elections.
According to the Election Commission, elections to 87 upazila parishads will be held on March 10 in the first phase.
The last date for submitting nomination papers is February 11 while that of withdrawal is February 19.
The 87 AL nominated chairman candidates are Amirul Islam (Panchagarh Sadar upazila), Kazi Mahmudur Rahman (Tentulia), Hasnat Zaman Chowdhury Jorge (Debiganj), Faruk Alam (Boda) and Towhidul Islam (Atwari) in  
Panchagarh district; Shahid Mahmud (Nilphamari Sadar), Tofail Ahmed (Domar), Tobibul Islam (Dimla), Mokhsedul Momin (Syedpur), Zakir Hossain Babul (Kishoreganj) and Ansar Ali Mintu (Jaldhaka); Nazrul Haque Patwary Bhola (Lalmonirhat Sadar), Ruhul Amin Babul (Patgram), Liakat Hossain (Hatibandha), Rafiqul Alam (Aditmari) and Mahbubuzzaman Ahmed (Kaliganj); Mostafa Zaman (Nageshwari, Kurigram), Golam Hossain Montu (Ulipur), Shawkat Ali Sarkar (Chilmari), Mujibur Rahman (Rowmari), Nurunnabi Chowdhury (Bhurangamari), Abu Nur Md Akteruzzaman (Rajarhat), Ataur Rahman (Phulbari), Shafiul Alam (Rajibpur) and Aman Uddin Ahmed (Kurigram Sadar); SM Solaiman Ali (Joypurhat Sadar), Monirul Shahid Mandal (Panchbibi), Abdus Salam Akanda (Akkelpur), Minfuzur Rahman (Kalai) and Mostakim Mandal (Khetlal); Munsur Rahman (Paba, Rashahi), Lutfur Haider Rashid (Tanore), ZM Hira Bacchu (Puthia), Nazrul Islam (Durgapur), Layeb Uddin (Bagha), Jahangir Alam (Godagari), Fakrul Islam (Charghat), Abdus Salam (Mohonpur) and Anil Kumar (Bagmara); Shariful Islam Ramzan (Natore Sadar), Jahidul Islam (Gurudaspur), Sekendar Rahman (Bagatipara), Shafikul Islam (Singra), Siddikur Rahman Patwary (Baraigram) and Ishahak Ali (Lalpur).
The candidates include Mohammad Riaz Uddin (Sirajganj Sadar), Faruk Hossain (Chauhali), Khalilur Rahman Siraji (Kazipur), Imrul Hossain Tang (Raiganj), Shafiqul Islam (Ullapara), Azad Rahman (Shahjadpur), Ali Akanda (Belkuchi) and Sanjid Kumar Karmakar (Tarash); Mohammad Abul Hossain (Jamalpur Sadar), AKM Saiful Islam (Bokshiganj), Abul Kalam Azad (Dewanganj), Kamruzzaman (Melandah), Obaidur Rahman Belal (Madarganj), Gias Uddin Pathan (Sarishabari) and SM Jamal Abdun Naser (Islampur); Tafsir Uddin Khan (Netrakona Sadar), Golam Kibria Jabbar (Khaliajuri), Mohammad Emdadul Haque Khan (Durgapur), Shahid Iqbal (Mohanganj), Golam Rasul Talukder (Barhatta), Abdul Khaleque (Kamlakanda), Habibur Rahman (Madan), Jahidul Islam Sujan (Purbadhala) and Nurul Islam (Kendua); Moshiur Rahman Shamim (Habiganj Sadar), Alamgir Chowdhury (Nabiganj), Mushfiul Alam Azad (Lakhai), Abdul Hye (Bahubal), Atikur Rahman (Madhabpur), Abdul Kadir Laskar (Chunarughat), Mortuza Hasan (Ajmiriganj) and Abul Kashem Chowdhury (Baniachong); Khairul Huda (Sunamganj Sadar), Yusuf Al Azad (Jamalganj), Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mahmud (Shalla), Rafiqul Islam Talukder (Bishwambarpur), Shamim Ahmed Murad (Dharmapasha), Fazlur Rahman (Chhatak), Abdur Rahim (Dowarabazar), Prodip Ray (Derai), Karuna Sindhu Chowdhury Bablu (Tahirpur) and Abul Kalam (Dakkhin Sunamganj).
The EC said the fifth upazila parishad elections will be held in five phases from March 10.
According to electoral law, election to any upazila council has to take place at least six months before the tenure of the local government body expires.
