Kazi Zahidul Hasan :
Although several flyovers were built in the city to provide relief to the people from traffic snarls, illegal occupants under these flyovers have become a nuisance.
Even many spaces beneath the flyovers have turned into waste dumping zones, animal feeding ground, den of drug addicts, vagabonds are ruining the very positive purpose of these costly projects.
During a visit, tea stalls, makeshift food and poultry shops and garbage boxes were found at various points under the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover.
Besides, cattle feeding ground was set up occupying a large part of the area under the flyovers' opposite to Bongobazar that has created huge public nuisances.
A similar picture was also found in Khilgaon and Moghbazar-Mouchak flyovers, with vendors setting up makeshift shops illegally under the flyovers occupying a huge space, while push-cards and rickshaw-vans are kept haphazardly at many points taking advantage of poor maintenance by corporations.
Besides, garbage is also thrown at various points under these flyovers.
Commuters, shopkeepers and residents of these areas claim that despite numerous complaints, city authorities have failed to remove the illegal occupants and garbage under the flyovers. "Some people come early in the morning and throw garbage, but the authorities have failed to act," said Anwar Hossain, a shopkeeper near the city's Moghbazar intersection. He said the garbage has become a permanent menace here. The authorities should remove the dump and impose fine on those throwing garbage under the flyover.
"The foul smell emanating from the garbage is annoying to both shopkeepers and commuters. "We have made several complaints to the authorities, but in vain."
A resident of Moghbazar said that having suffered through terrible gridlocks and various other problems for years because of the construction of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover they are now forced to endure this new nuisance. But city authorities continue to shirk their responsibility of cleaning this mess saying that it is the duty of the construction company to maintain the flyovers and build gardens on their medians.
An anonymous Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) official told the New Nation that they are not responsible for the problem saying it is the duty of the construction company to maintain the flyovers.
"Under the agreement, the main construction firm of Mohammad Hanif Flyover is supposed to do the work. Several letters have already been sent to the company to build gardens after removing the illegal occupants and existing garbage under the flyover but it is yet to respond," he added.
Mayor Syeed Khokon could not be reached comments despite several attempts on his cell phone.
"The ground floors of city flyovers have gone into the grips of illegal occupants creating public nuisance. Lack of maintenance is mainly responsible for the situation," Architect Iqbal Habib told The New Nation.
He said: Lack of maintenance is endangering the structural integrity and longevity of flyovers.
Iqbal Habib cited that piling of garbage under flyovers is another example of the sorry state of maintenance.
