Staff Reporter :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict any day on a review petition involving the dispute over the meaning and tenure of a convict's life imprisonment.
After completing legal arguments filed by one Ataur Mridha, the seven-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain yesterday kept the review petition CAV (curia advisari vult), which means the verdict will be delivered any day.
The apex court heard expert opinions from the four amicus curiae (friends of court) namely Advocate A F Hassan Ariff, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, Advocate Abdur Rezak Khan and Advocate A M Aminuddin on the issue.
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Advocate Shishir Monir appeared for the petitioner, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam argued for the state.
Mridha challenged an apex court verdict that on February 2 in 2014 commuted the death penalty of two convicts to imprisonment until death with an observation that 'life imprisonment means sentence until death'.
The then Appellate Division bench headed by the then Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha in that verdict also observed that 'life imprisonment   means sentence until death'.
Earlier, the lower court awarded them death penalty in connection with a murder case. The convicts filed appeals with the High Court against the lower court order. But the High Court upheld the death penalty.
The convicts then moved the apex court, which commuted their death penalty to life imprisonment, mentioning that it would be considered as jail until death.
But Mridha submitted the petition to the Supreme Court seeking review of its judgment in 2014. In his review petition, the petitioner said, as per relevant laws and according to another Supreme Court judgment, "a convict has to serve in jail for 22 and a half years if he is sentenced to life imprisonment."
