Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students have suspended their protest programme for two days for smooth completion of the university's admission test scheduled for October 14 (Monday).
The students will provide assistance to all aspiring students and their guardians who will come to the campus for the admission test, a spokesperson said on behalf of the protesting students.
As the BUET authorities have already taken noticeable steps in realising some of the students' 10-point demand, which included ban on organisational politics on campus, the agitating students have decided to have faith on them, added the spokesperson.
In five notices, signed by acting Registrar Dr Md Saidur Rahman, BUET announced a ban on organisational politics, drive against illegal occupants at residential halls and seal off offices of student organisations on the campus.
The university authorities also announced introducing a web portal where students can file complaints about ragging. They also said students accused in Abrar Fahad's murder will be permanently expelled once the charge sheet is submitted.
The authorities also promised to bear expenses of legal proceedings of Abrar murder case and bring every floor of the dormitories under round-the-clock CCTV monitoring.
Following the announcement at the base of the BUET Shaheed Minar, most of the students were seen going back to their respective halls.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of BUET, was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders at the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall between 7:00pm on Sunday and 2:30am on Monday.
The murder triggered a severe protests on university campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar murder.
Law enforcers suspect, Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.
Later, the agitating students placed a 10-point demand to the university authorities and threatened to go for a tougher movement if the demands are not met immediately.
The BUET authorities on Saturday sealed off three rooms of its two separate dormitories for illegal occupancy.
Jami-us-Sani, also the president of BUET unit's Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) said that he was a boarder of room No. 321 of Ahsan Ullah Hall but the room was sealed off on Saturday as his studentship ended a while ago.
On the other hand, the room of BCL's BUET unit General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Rasel-room no. 3012 of Sher-e-Bangla hall-was also sealed off over the same reason, Jami confirmed. Rasel was arrested in connection with the murder of BUET student Abrar.
Another room of Ahsan Ullah Hall-room No. 121 -- was sealed off because it was being used as an office of BCL, Jami further said.
