SEVEN
people who had been committing crimes including mugging implicating
themselves as the members of law enforcement (DB police) agency in
different parts of the capital for the last 5 years were arrested by
police, said officials of Lalbag Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police
(DMP).
According to the sources, a group of 10 people used to work in
three groups. A team was in charge of planning and implementation.
Another team used to work as follower. And the responsibility of the
third party was the operation. After arresting the seven members of the
gang, police said that they all were the members of an organized
kidnapping ring in the city.
People posing themselves as other is
nothing new. At least 10 gangs of muggers were active in the Port City
and its adjacent areas in the guise of members of Detective Branch (DB)
and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) over ten years ago. Last year some
dodgy men introducing themselves as high-ranking officials in public
administration and belonging to the ruling party cheated people out of
their fortunes in the name of getting them lucrative jobs. The law
enforcement agencies arrested a number of cheats in this connection, but
the hoodwinking continues unabated.
What is new, however, and
heartening, is that the police have used Radio Frequency Identification
Technology or RFID to catch the accused criminals for the first time. It
indicates that our security forces are getting adept at using high
quality technology to catch criminals. For long we have had the notion
that our forces were inept at using any sort of proper methodology to
catch crooks and due to shoddy investigation, witness and evidence
tampering many criminals have managed to get a get out of jail free
card.
But if the police keep up this activities and try to learn even
more scientific methods it would be better for them then merely trying
to act as the governments agents to catch political opponents --- a fact
which makes then inefficient. Trying to be the actual safeguards to the
public good is far better than trying to be political hounds who obey
one master.
