Ehsanul Haque Jasim :Although several party leaders submitted nominations for the mayor post in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls, the BNP is likely to back its Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas for the city, said party insiders. However, the party is facing trouble about selecting preferred candidate in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls, as it-backed aspirant Abdul Awal Mintoo has been disqualified from the polls race. The Election Commission on Wednesday cancelled the nomination of Mintoo while it accepted that of his son Tabith Awal. Mahi B Chowdhury, son of former President Badrudduza Choywdhury, also submitted nomination. Although Tabith and Mahi are being considered as the alterative candidates, BNP leaders don't consider them as right candidates against the Awami League-backed candidate. Meanwhile, question has been raised about the cancellation of Mintoo's nomination. The BNP men are surprised over the mistake. Many said that it was a deliberated mistake. They believe that a heavyweight candidate like Mintoo could not make such a 'silly mistake' in the nomination paper. "The mistake was mysterious."Mintoo, an adviser of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, lost his eligibility for contesting the DNCC polls by bringing in an unqualified voter to support his candidacy. According to the law, a DNCC voter would have to propose his candidacy and another have to support it. However, the person named Abdur Razzak, who supported Mintoo's nomination, was not a voter of the DNCC area. He is a voter of Sector-12 of Uttara under Harirampur union Parishad."Mintoo could not make such mistake. He might do it intentionally. He might have link with the government internally. He has strong lobbying with the government's side, as his son married the daughter of Gowher Rizvi, an influential adviser to the prime minister. His mistake as well as the cancellation of the nomination paper has created a boon for the AL-backed candidate Annisul Huq," said a BNP leader, seeking anonymity.  A reliable source said that Mintoo is now not staying in the country. He left Dhaka for aboard secretly. Knowing the news, this reporter made a call to the mobile phone of Mintoo, but an employee received the phone-call. When asked, the employee said, "Sir (Mintoo) is now in hiding to avert arrest. He is not out of the country." The employee identified him as Abu Taher, an employee of Mintoo's office.        When asked, BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said that there is still time. BNP would take the final decision about the DNCC candidate. Admitting the mistake is a silly one, he said that the authorities should allow Abdul Awal Mintoo to correct the mistake. The mistake is not violation of law. It's just a silly mistake, he added.  Sources said that Khaleda Zia herself is also disappointed over the incident. She had instructed Mintoo and her lawyers to work sincerely to make the appellate authority allow correcting the flaw, party insiders said.Abdul Awal Mintoo on Thursday filed appeal Election Commission against cancellation of nomination. Dhaka's Divisional Commissioner, which has been made the appeal authority by the EC, will hear the appeal today afternoon. Mintoo's soon Tafsir Awal submitted the appeal. On the other hand, BNP leaders Abdus Salam, Dr Asaduduzzaman Ripon and Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintoo submitted nominations for DSCC polls alongside Mirza Abbas. The EC accepted the nominations of Salam and Ripon, and cancelled Pintoo.BNP is also facing a problem over its support in the DSCC polls due to submission of nominations by one more probable candidates. The polls to the three major city corporations DSCC, DNCC and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will be held on April 28.
