A joint meeting of Awami League district units was held at the party chief's Dhanmondi political office yesterday afternoon to discuss the present political situation and to fix strategy to counter anti-government movement of BNP and its allies.
Presidents and General Secretaries of Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Narayanganj and Narsingdi district units along with MPs from the relevant constituencies were present in the meeting. Tuesday's joint meeting mainly focused on the grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan marking the event of historic March 7 where the leaders discussed how to make it a mammoth gathering.  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also president of AL, will address the meeting as the chief guest. Apart from it, the militant issue, particularly the recent attack of Islamic militant outfit JMB on a police van at Trishal in Mymensingh district got priority in the meeting.
"Militancy is the main problem of Bangladesh. The people do not want  terrorist activities anymore. Especially, the month of January was very dangerous for the country. Although, the people were saved from possible disaster anyhow, the conspirators are still trying to execute their plot….So, danger is still there," said Communication Minister Obaidul Quader while addressing the meeting as chief guest.
Earlier in the day, an extended meeting of AL Dhaka city unit was held at party headquarters in the city's Bangabandhu Avenue. It urged the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia not to create anarchy in the country by terming the present government as 'illegal'. The meeting observed that the government has got acceptance over the January 5 general election from most of the countries around the globe.
It also took decision to resist violence and anarchy of BNP and its allies by cooperating with the government for next five years, as the next general election will be held after the present government's tenure ends.
The meeting discussed that the BNP and its allies have not enough strength to initiate a countrywide anti-government movement. It also observed that the BNP and its 19-party alliance will not able to achieve enough strength even in near future to push down the government.
"Cool down your [Khaleda] head. Better identify the government's wrongs and misdeeds. We will try to take lesson from the faults. But it will not bring any result if you call the government illegal," Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said while addressing the meeting, as chief guest.
Presided over by Dhaka city unit president MA Aziz, The meeting was also participated, among others, by AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam and General Secretary of Dhaka city unit Moffazal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
Meanwhile, the AL associate bodies and its front organisatiosns will hold a joint meeting at party president's Dhanmondi political office today [Wednesday] afternoon. In a statement, Obaidul Quader, who is also AL presidium member urged the concerned persons to attend the meeting in due time.
