Parliament on Wednesday adopted a resolution thanking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her wisdom, farsightedness and dynamic leadership to turn Bangladesh into a lower middle-income country.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, who was presiding over the day's session, passed the motion unanimously by voice vote after a special discussion in this regard.
Awami League MP Abdur Razzak moved the motion in the House as the World Bank included Bangladesh in its recent list of lower middle-income countries.
Placing the motion, he said Bangladesh graduated to a lower middle-income country from the least-income one due to the wisdom, farsightedness and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her government's farsighted plans and socioeconomic development of the nation, and implementation of the plans through good governance.
Taking part in the special discussion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina renewed her firm resolve to turn Bangladesh into a higher middle-income country from the present level of lower middle-income one within 2021 when the country would be observing its Golden jubilee of independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. "We're working to attain that goal."
She said Bangladesh would not remain at the lower middle-income level rather it wants to move to the higher ladder to be a developed country.
Hasina said by the grace of Almighty Allah, her government has been able to move ahead in all fronts, including in health, education, digital technology, transparency and accountability have been restored. The government has been able also to curb terrorism while the country is gradually moving towards prosperity.
Sheikh Hasina said this success of becoming lower a middle-income country not belongs to herself, rather it belongs to the country and its people as it is the results of united efforts of all. "The countrymen deserve this thanks giving motion."
The Leader of the House said that the support of people is very much needed since Bangladesh wants to move ahead as a dignified nation.
She alleged that the achievements that the country has gained so far through braving various obstacles like arson, vandalism, killings, burning people to deaths by the BNP-Jamaat clique.
The Prime Minister noted that the country could have attained over 7 percent growth rate in the last fiscal year had they could run Bangladesh properly, but thanks to the countrymen as they did not respond to the arson and vandalism by the BNP-Jamaat men rather rejected them. "For which, we've been able to achieve such success and we've to move ahead in phases through maintaining this success and seek support and cooperation from all."
Hasina went on saying, "I believe we'll be able to help Bangladesh reach its desired goal through support and cooperation from all and thus turn it into a prosperous and developed country by 2041 and materialise the dream of building 'Sonar Bangla' as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman."
Joining the discussion, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said Bangladesh continued to get outstanding success under the bold leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"I don't believe that our progress will be halted any more because of mindless activities," he said pointing at the recent violent political programmes.
Placing the country's progress in different index, Muhith said Bangladesh will turn into developed country by 2041 under the visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Agricultural Minister Matia Chowdhury, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, AL MPs Prof Ali Ashraf, Abdul Matin Khasru, Dr Dipu Moni, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Muhammad Faruk Khan, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, AKM Zahangir Hossain and Tarana Halim, Jatiya Party MP Kazi Firoz Rashid, Jasod MP Moin Uddin Khan Badal, Workers Party MP Fazle Hossain Badsha, Independent MP Rustum Ali Faraji, Tarikat Party's chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary, among others, joined the discussion.
