City roads have turned into roads of miseries

WORSENING situation of our roads has not only made Dhaka's inhabitants difficult to commute, but rampant digging and uncountable tons of dusts due to heavy construction of mega-projects have made our roads incompatible for travelling. Take two projects for instance - the Jatrabari-Demra road and the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover. The condition of the former, especially from Jatrabari intersection to Kajla, is extremely bad in terms of bumpy and uneven rides and innumerable potholes while the completion of the latter has been facing delay for more than two years. These two projects followed by unplanned digging here and there have made citizens' lives agonizing beyond imagination.

Our contractors have quite often been alleged for deliberately slowing down the pace of work progress so to profit more by showing increased costs. Monitoring of the work progress of our several mega-projects is not satisfactory either. Moreover, governments concerned Roads And Communications Authorities are repeatedly failing to ensure smooth travelling by our roads. In the face of a plethora of chaos, mismanagement and corruption - it's actually the commuters who are suffering the extreme. According to one of the two Dhaka Mayors, a number of adjacent roads along the Jatrabari route are in a sorry state for well over five years. Though the City Corporation for overseeing Dhaka South Zone started repairing the roads some four months ago, but unanticipated early rains have made the tasks harder. However, in such environment related cases construction authorities should consider using of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) method, instead of using bitumen, for repairing the roads. Additionally, our Capital and other cities are in need of more drainage systems for free outflow of water.

The point, however, the both North and South City Corporations should focus more on increasing their functional capacities while ensuring systematic well-coordinated initiatives. Also, they must complete tasks within stipulated timeframes and avoid all costly deliberate delays.

With regard to delayed completion of communication projects, our construction firms should also be more committed and sincere. The sad states of a number of projects have been wreaking havoc on our citizens for years now. And a number of these incomplete projects coupled with poorly built roads have long been subjected to serious environmental pollution as the firms responsible for constructing and repairing these are least inclined to protect the environment and yet continues to violate their contracts with the government.

The people, like us, want to see the end of this organised chaos seen and experienced in our roads. We know that graft and high-handedness by the vested interests are to blame for our agonising roads. We expect the government to promptly and efficiently address these mounting road problems. Our citizens are lawfully entitled to safe and secured roads, and it's the state's duty to ensure it.
