The BNP on Wednesday rejected the results of Khulna City Corporation polls and demanded the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda's resignation.
"The government has flexed its muscle on Tuesday's voting in KCC. On behalf of the party, I reject the Khulna polls result and demand the resignation of the chief election commissioner," BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said in a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP made the comment after Awami League candidate Talukdar Abdul Khaleque won the election on Tuesday defeating BNP-backed candidate Nazrul Islam Manju.
The BNP leader accused the ruling Awami League men of casting huge fake votes after driving out Manju's polling agents from most of the voting centers.
"Tuesday's election was nothing but arrogance of the illegal government's illegal firearms upon the undone people. AL muscle men in groups have cast fake votes at most polling stations. At many stations, presiding officers assisted them in vote rigging. They stuffed the ballot boxes with fake votes in minutes. The magistrates allowed it," Rizvi said.
On the Election Commission's claim that 65 percent of votes were cast during the election, Rizvi said, basically, the voter turnout was less than 30 percent. Many failed to go to the polling stations in the face of obstruction.
