The second round of FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 begins today. Group-C champions France will face Group-D runners-up Argentina in the first match of the knock-out phase at the Kazan Arena in Russia. The match kicks-off at 8.00 pm BST (Bangladesh Standard Time).
In the day's other match of last 16, Group-A champions Uruguay will take on
the Group-B runners-up Portugal at Sochi in Russia. The match starts at 12.00 am BST.
France emerged as the Group-C champions bagging seven points from three matches, while their counterpart Argentina became Group-D runners-up collecting four points from as many outings.
On the other hand, all-win Uruguay, the champions of the Group-A stormed into the last 16 securing nine points from three matches. Portugal, the runners-up of the Group-B booked their place in the second round with five points from three matches.
Hot favourites Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Colombia and England confirmed their last 16 berths from their respective groups.
It was tragedy of this World Cup that reigning champions Germany failed to book their place in the last 16. They were out of the World Cup after conceded a two goals defeat against their opponents South Korea in the injury time of their crucial Group-F match on June 27. No teams from African region failed to reach the second round. Japan, the powerhouse of Asia is the only team of the Asian Continent, which confirmed their last 16 berth.
South Korea, Iran, Senegal and Nigeria bade World Cup good-bye holding their heads high.
The winners of the second round will get tickets of the quarter-finals.
