UNB, Cox's Bazar :
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and its partner NGO Forum for Public Health on Wednesday inaugurated a safe drinking water facility at Cox's Bazar Government College.
The project is designed to supply safe drinking water for around 12,500 students at the college and to reduce their health risks.
Before this facility, there was no safe drinking water for the students.
College principal Prof AKM Fazlul Karim Chowdhury said all the students would benefit.
"We are very grateful and thankful to UNHCR for its special contribution to this college," he said.
UNHCR's senior operations manager Elisabeth Pelster said the generous support local Bangladeshis had shown when tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees arrived in Cox's Bazar seeking assistance since last August.
"We are making every possible effort to improve the situation to help you and to invest in Cox's Bazar and its social infrastructure. Hopefully, you will find there are a lot of dividends to be gained by refugee protection," she said.
The programme is one of the 'quick impact' projects that UNHCR has been undertaking in support of the Bangladesh host community.
Other initiatives include rehabilitating local schools, supporting livelihood projects for some of the poorest communities, installing Community Technology Access centres, improving roads and drainage systems and installing solar lights.
