BANGLADESH Foreign Minister on Thursday stressed the need for strong support of China for resolving the prolonged Rohingya crisis with early repatriation of the displaced people. China's strong support would be necessary so that 'Myanmar moves in the right direction for resolving the Rohingya crisis,' the Minister told Chinese ambassador Zhang Zuo who called on him at the Foreign Ministry.
Zhang asserted that China is willing to play constrictive role to realise repatriation of displaced people and China would facilitate communication between Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a practical solution of the crisis, the newspapers reported. More than 7,00,000 Rohingyas, mostly women, children and aged people, entered Bangladesh after fleeing brutal murder, arson and rape during security operations by Myanmar military in Rakhine State beginning from August 25, 2017, what the United Nations denounced as ethnic cleansing and genocide.
No doubt, the Rohingya issue is complicated and solving it is arduous. For Myanmar, it needs to improve the situation in Rakhine State immediately through stopping violence by its arrogant military. In Bangladesh context; the top priority at this stage is to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Dhaka should take concrete measures to realize the repatriation involving the international community, where China could play the role of a mediator. So far we know, Beijing is interested to provide assistance in resettling the displace Rohingyas, which includes emergency assistance and reconstruction; boost cooperation in developing the border areas between Myanmar and Bangladesh, and improve the living standards of locals.
From the very beginning we have penned down about the importance of China's role in solving Rohingya crisis while it's a global super power. China is an old and tested friend of Bangladeshi for a long time. So, China can't be a bystander at this moment. As common neighbour of both Bangladesh and Myanmar, its China's moral responsibility to solve the crisis before it is too late. The political stability of South and Southeast Asia region is also depended on final and permanent solution of the Rohingya crisis.
