The leaders of the Bangladesh Krishak Samity, an organisation of farmers on Friday declared that they would stage a demonstration across the country on May 23 demanding increase of paddy price, among others.
The announcement was given at a rally organised by the samity at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka yesterday.
While speaking at the rally, the party  leaders called for looking after the interests of the farmers.
Sazzad Jahir Chandan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Krishak Samity, said, "The farmers will hold a sit-in programme in front of Deputy Commissioners' offices in all the districts of the country on May 23 to press home their demands".
"We will announce a tougher programme on May 23 if the government does not take any initiative in this regard by this time," he said.
Advocate SMA Sabur, President of the Association, said, the government is yet to respond  to the farmers' interests although the government says that  the country has achieved self-sufficiency in food grains. SMA Sabur said, the farmers  are frustrated at the lower price of the  paddy  and  hence there is a demand of setting up paddy purchasing centres at every union.
The success of self-sufficiency has been possible for the contribution of farmers but they are not getting reasonable price of the paddy, he said.
"We differ with the agricultural policy of the government," he said..
After the rally, the demonstrators brought out a procession in the city.
