40 injured in BCL factional clash

At least 40 people, including six policemen, were injured in a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over celebration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 73rd birthday at Madaripur on Saturday.
Among the injured, 11 were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
The clash took place at the Government Nazimuddin University College.
Sources said that the BCL Madaripur unit is divided into two groups. One group is loyed to the former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan MP group and another group is led by Awami League Central Organizing Secretary Bahauddin Nasim.
The Nasim-backed group brought a rally at noon on occasion of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s 73rd birth anniversary. At the same time, pro-Shahjahan Khan group also brought out rally.
Soon after, the both groups locked into altercation that turned into chase and counter chase. Agitated leaders and activists started hurling brick-bats at each other.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets to ease the situation.
The BCL unit Vice-President and Shahjahan Khan’s son Asibur Rahman and Nasim’s follower Zahid Hossain Anik blamed each other for the incident.
Additional Superintendent of Madaripur Police Badrul Alam Molla said additional police have been deployed to avoid further untoward situation.
