Staff Reporter :
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an inquiry into allegations of corruption and the accumulation of substantial assets in the name of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed’s wife and daughters.

ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmin confirmed the information during a press briefing at the ACC headquarters stating that a three-member committee has been formed to investigate these allegations.

She said, “Legal actions will be taken according to the relevant laws of the ACC after an investigation.”

ACC Deputy Director Hafizur Islam has been appointed to lead the inquiry committee.

Simultaneously, a writ has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking an inquiry into Benazir Ahmed’s alleged corruption.

Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Regan filed the writ, naming four defendants including the ACC chairman and secretary.

Khorsheda Yasmin disclosed, “The anti-graft body approved investigating the allegations against Benazir on April 18, following reports from various media outlets suggesting that the former police official had illicitly amassed a significant fortune.”

Notably, on March 31, a national daily published a report detailing Benazir’s alleged corruption, with several electronic media outlets echoing these claims the following day.

The reports shed light on Benazir Ahmed’s opulent lifestyle, particularly during his tenure as the director-general of the Rapid Action Battalion from January 2015 to April 2020, before assuming the role of IGP on April 15, 2020.

They also pointed out that his dependents hold shares in various companies.

Benazir, however, vehemently refuted these allegations on Saturday, asserting that the reports were entirely false and fabricated.

Nevertheless, on Sunday, lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon submitted an application to the ACC, urging them to investigate the accusations against Benazir Ahmed.
