Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Habibur Rahman, announced the implementation of a gatelock system in inter-district buses to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital. He warned that action would be taken against buses picking up passengers from Mohakhali to Banani without adhering to the gatelock system.

Commissioner Rahman made these statements in response to reporters after attending the inauguration ceremony of the Traffic Safety Awareness Program and Road Safety Slogan Competition-2024, organized by Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Tejgaon on Tuesday.

Explaining the gate lock system, Rahman emphasized that after leaving a bus stoppage with a certain number of passengers, buses would only be permitted to stop at specified locations. Long-distance buses are expected to depart from the terminal and proceed directly to their destinations. Legal action will be taken against buses found stopping without authorization, particularly if passengers are standing around.

Mohakhali serves as a major bus terminal in the Dhaka metropolitan area, with parking space available for 400 vehicles.

However, approximately 1800 cars traverse the area daily, leading to prolonged road congestion.

Rahman highlighted the practice of buses picking up passengers from Mohakhali to Banani, especially near the railway crossing, as a significant contributor to traffic congestion in the area.

The introduction of the gate lock system aims to streamline bus operations and reduce traffic congestion in key areas of the capital, thereby enhancing overall traffic management.
