Staff Reporter :
The ruling Awami Leaque (AL) will not hold its per-scheduled rally in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque South Gate in the capital Dhaka on December 10 as Election Commission did not give permission for the programme.

The AL had called rally in observance of the World Human Rights Day. The party will now observe the event through indoor programmes.

Awami League General Secretary and the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this to journalists on Tuesday morning after paying his tributes at the grave of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy on the occasion of his 60th death anniversary.

“The AL had applied to the Election Commission, but it did not accept the request. The commission is afraid of showdown in the name of rally ahead of the general election. For this, we will decide to hold indoor programmes,” Obaidul Quader said.

“We have changed our decision to hold the rally as we do not want to violate the electoral code of conduct,” he said.

The AL leader also said that boycotting the upcoming general election and calling blockades and hartals are not democratic behaviour.

Earlier, Dhaka City South AL had announced to hold the rally at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on December 10 on the occasion of World Human Rights Day.
