BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that Awami League leaders have bogged down in corruption everywhere, shattering the country’s socio-political and economic structures.
“The government has sunk in corruption up to its throat. From their (AL’s) high-level leaders to the grassroots are now immersed in corruption, and we’ve seen some evidence of that over the last few days,” he said.
Fakhrul came up with the comments while
talking to reporters after paying tributes to the BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday with newly elected President and General Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
He accused the ruling party leaders, including that of Jubo League and Chhatra League, of creating an awful situation for the country by seriously indulging in corruption. “It’s breaking down the country’s socio-political and economic structures.”
About the recent arrests of two Jubo League leaders as part of a crackdown on illegal casinos and businesses, he said, now snakes are coming out from earthworm’s holes.
About the ruling party’s allegation that the arrested duo was involved with BNP politics in the past, he said, Awami League leaders are making such remarks only to avoid their responsibility. “There’s no point in making such comments as people understand everything. They (AL leaders) all are involved in corruption. No-one is left clean.”
The BNP leader warned that the ruling party leaders would not be able to escape public wraths for their widespread misdeeds and corruption.
He trashed Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s remarks that BNP introduced the ‘casino culture’ in Bangladesh, and claimed there had been no media report on casino business during BNP’s rule.
“Now media are awash with reports that Awami League government is not only indulging in corruption, but also turning the country into a failed state by destroying its socio-political structures,” Fakhrul observed.
He alleged that the government had conspired to prevent JCD from holding its council using court, but they successfully did it braving all the obstacles.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Mirza Abbas were, among others, present.
After nearly 27 years, JCD, the student wing of BNP, got elected Fazlur Rahman Khokon its President and Iqbal Hossain Shamol General Secretary respectively on Wednesday night.
